Default DTS Master or Dobly TrueHD

Why are the majority of discs, especially Sony, who is the big push behind Blu-ray, not giving this medium the audio it requires, that is the lossless formats of DTS Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD. Hardly any discs are being produced with either of these audio formats. I want my HD theather to sound great too, not just look great.

The PCM soundtrack does that.

And a lot of Disney's PCM tracks are 24-bit to boot.

They are competely right. DD TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, and LPCM are all provide lossless sound. LPCM (uncompressed PCM) just takes up a lot more space to achieve the same sound as the other lossless audio codecs, but Blu-ray has the space and bandwidth/throughput to do this.

Actually, on The Departed, the LPCM track on Blu-ray sounded better to the reviewers at HighDefDigest than the DD TrueHD track on the HD DVD version.

Hi ~
I am sorry for I'd like to ask some stupid questions...

1. Does the uncompressed PCM's SQ batter than DTS-HD MA & DD Ture-HD?
2. Does BD's DD5.1 SQ batter than current DVD ? (compare with same tital... like as Eight Below)

Dolby. It's Dolby.

I wish people would forget about DTS-MA. DTS doesn't even know how to properly decode it. Biggest mistake Fox has made on this next-gen format.

Technically, there should not be a difference in lossless audio codecs. But, if you read the review on highdefdigest.com for "The Departed", you will read something different. Personally, I don't know if it is HD DVD's hardware/software implementation or DD TrueHD really isn't truly lossless, but the Blu-ray uncompressed PCM track sounds better than the HD DVD DD TrueHD track on "The Departed".

Theorethically they should sound the same, as DTS HD MA or Dolby True-HD tracks sourced from a LPCM original uncompressed master are supposed to be the LPCM shrunk into a smaller file (about half the size) without loss.

DVDs Dolby Digital 5.1 has a maximum bitrate of 448 kb/s (some are 384 kb/s) while Blu-rays Dolby Digital 5.1 has one of 640 kb/s which is 40% less compression.

DTS 5.1/6.1 on DVDs can be 1.5 Mbs but most of them after the first ones use only half that bitrate while on Blu-rays the basic DTS core is the full 1.5 Mb/s

(1.5 Mb seconds = 1500 kb/s)

DTS better know how to decode it because Onkyo is 4 weeks away from releasing the 605 receiver with TrueHD and DTS-MA decoding.

Denon will have their specs out by the end of June.

DTS were demoing DTS-HD Master Audio at CES this year.

Most of the studios will move to using DTS-MA or TrueHD once the formats are more widely used in receivers. After all, there are still no TrueHD receivers on the market either.

I don't think there are any 6.1 tracks that utilize 1.5 Mbps, only 5.1 when it comes to DVD-Video.

So can players extract a standard DD 5.1 track from DD TrueHD, like they can extract a DTS track from DTS HD MA? If so, I'd prefer DD TrueHD just because DD sounds so much better than DTS on my amp. I think this is because my amp can only compress the dynamic range for DD audio not DTS, and I find the dynamic range of DTS excessive, with much of it either too quiet or too loud.

If I bought a more modern amp / receiver (mine is a denon avr 3802), do they all nowadays tend to have the ability to compress the dynamic range of DTS audio?

Yea, they can. My PS3 extracts the DD 5.1 from the DD TrueHD from the NIN: Beside You in Time concert disc.

Your PS3 decodes the full TrueHD track and streams it to your receiver as PCM...not the core 1.5 Mbps DD.

Since I'm on my PS3, I have to make this short. The answer to your 1st question depends on what version of TrueHD is being used. The FBA TrueHD stream (all BDs with TrueHD uses this stream) contains the DD core. The FBB TrueHD stream (used on most HD DVD titles) does not.

The DD core in the TrueHD FBA stream can be 448kbps or 640kbps.

I think paidgeek mentioned another thing about future BDs from SPHE. He said that the title (I think T5E) will have TrueHD and PCM 5.1. But there would also be a DD 5.1 English version. So that TrueHD track will JUST be TrueHD and no DD5.1 embedded in there.

Might wanna clarify things with paidgeek. So basically BD has enough flexibility to do lots of things with soundtracks: embed and/or seperate.

I have a PS3, but no HDMI for my reciever. What is my best choice?

I can do DTS and Dolby Digital. My receiver is a 6 year-old Onkyo.

I have optical in, and COAX.

Just use optical for now and enjoy Dolby Digital and DTS.

Hello my friend ,

First of all ,PCM soundtrack is better than DolbyTHD or equally.
Second,DTS MA is done now only by fox MAYBE IN FUTURE WHEN WE WILL HAVE A RECEIVER CAPABLE OF DECODING IT ,WE WILL SEE IF IT SOUNDS BETTER THAN PCM OR NOT.

fOR THE TIME BEING AND BECAUSE YOU HAVE POST YOUR FIRST THREAD I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TO VISIT MANY WEBSITE WHERE THEY ACTUALLY REVIEWING BD AND YOU CAN CONCLUDE BY YOURSELF THAT PCM IS SO FAR BETTER THAN DOLBYTHD.
RECOMMENDED WEBSITE IS HOMETHEATESPOT.COM;UPCOMINGDISCS.COM;
DVDFILE.COM
NOW IN ORDER TO EXTRACT PCM SOUNDTRACK YOU NEED A RECEIVER HAVE HDMI INPUT FOR PS3

FOR A STANDARD PLAYER YOU NEED HDMI OR ANALOPOUTPUTS INCLUDED IN THE RECEIVER.

GOOD LUCK ENJOYING PCM AND BD .

YOU ARE WELCOME

Thanks. Yes, as 1.5Mb/s on DVDs was mostly used in the early titles/superbit titles and 6.1 DTS ES Discrete was a later development. There's no 1509kbps DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 on that list.

Well, why, that's why we buy BD now
