Default Question about Blu-ray PQ on my setup...

Hi Everyone,

This my first post, I just setup my PC to play back Blue Ray,
So far so good. I went out and bought Oceans 13 Blue ray movie.
I played it but was very disappointed at the quality, very grainy
and highly contrast. I also have a TV tuner that I get HD signal from
and the quality is much better. The images from my Canon HV20
are also superior. Since I don't have a table top Blue ray
player to compare to, I wonder if it is my setup.

Hi. First off, its called "Blu-ray" not blue-ray. drop the "e".

I take it that your monitor handles a 1080 resolution (at least 1920x1080).
If this is the case, then tell us what program you are using to watch your Blu-ray.

That is not a good film to use as a reference for Blu-ray quality:

User Comments on Ocean's 13

It is as the director intended, but not the cleanest image.

Look into these instead:

Dead Man's Chest
Casino Royale
I, Robot
Ratatouille

If you want to try a movie that will knock your socks off for visual clarity, try Cars and Ratatouille. These are PERFECT.

lol, you pretty much picked the junkiest movie for pic quality you could as a first buy.

Try Casino Royale, Cars, Ratatouille etc... ooh, Sunshine is great though about half the people hate the movie itself.

First bad movie choice. Search around the forums and you will find posts that list the best/worst pq Blu-ray movies available thus far. Second, upgrade your monitor. Your first post came off pretty rude instead of a plea for help. Upgrade your not so superior system first. Third, watch The Patriot, Kingdom of Heaven DC, or Casino. Great quality and all are really enjoyable movies. Much more enjoyable than Ocean's 13.

I wished I have check with you guys before going out and spent $37 at Blockbusters. I got so excited about Blu-ray I just rushed out to buy a movie.

I am considering take the movie back to Blockbusters.

I am watching at 1920x1080 with Cyberlink PowerDVD

Do you think some of the movies are up res to HD from Standard Def 720x486?

I looked at the back of the Ocean's Thirteen case, at the bottom,
English, SDH, main feature only, perhaps it is not shot in HD

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Bourne1,

I don't see where I came across being rude.
I was just expressing my first encounter with a Blu-ray movie.
It looks like I pick the wrong one as so many have kindly point out to me.

By the way thanks for your input

Sorry, I guess I am just in a bit of a bad mood today (an annoying person at work and then the forecast of snow coming in this weekend even though today is 70*). But seriously check out Casino Royal, it was one of the first BD's and still one of the top in terms of PQ. Just like how all the opening credits in Bond movies a great and unique, the one for Casino Royal in BD just looks spectacular.

Bourne1,

No problem. From 70 to snow that is extreme.
Yes, snow, we had all time record of snow fall this year, spend hours
digging out.

I have seen HD 1080i broadcast on PBS on my Sony KDS 50A2000 1080P
and it is very good so that is why I was so taken aback by Ocean's13.

I am very interested in quality of HD since I have to produce my next project in HD.

I will probably go out and get myself a Playstation 3 or a table top player
to compare to my computer based playback

PS3, it is the best on the market right now.

Happens to the best of us. I was disgusted with Warner's "The bi-Polar Express." That was a 15gb HD DVD converted over to play on blu-ray. I have a number of BD movies on BD25 discs. Though they are nothing like BD50, they are marketly better than the HD DVD 15Gb offerings.

I was very happy with Ice Age 1 & 2 on BD25, though I wish it was better.

Absolutely not. Ocean's Thirteen was shot with 35mm film and edited using a 4k digital master, both FAR higher definition than 1080p.

It looks exactly as Steven Soderbergh intended. I happen to love the look of that movie, but it lacks the gloss that a lot of folks here expect with every single release.

As has been meantioned above, try a Pixar release or some of the others mentioned before changing anything about your system. If it still looks soft to you, then it it's time to make changes.

Welcome aboard!

Watch Michael Clayton if you want to see George Clooney in HD.

You are right, it was pretty dumb of me to even suggest it was shot in SD (standard Def) what do they show in theatres....wasn't thinking

This a great forum, very active and informative

No, I didn't mess with any of the setting.
It is like J6P said, it is a look the director deliberately went for.
It was just my luck I chose it and plus it is a visual preference.

Has anyone burned Blu-ray compliant disks?
I am working on a project that have to be delivered in HD.
It is very short so I am hoping to put it on a DVD but at 1920x1080
Perhaps this is not the right forum to discuss this. Can someone point me in
the right direction

Thanks,
Leo

Just as a side note, regarding the whole grainy look thing...

This has been and probably will continue to be an overly-debated topic for a while. You will notice that some movies have a lot of grain, while others don't. I think the general opinion is that the amount of grain is part of the director's intent, and shouldn't be confused with the picture quality of a blu-ray. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken on this...

The first blu I bought/saw was '300' and there's a lot of grain in it. I noticed it instantly and it sorta bothered me but having seen many more movies now, I realize this really is a movie-specific thing. I don't even notice it anymore, but I really can add to the sharpness of the picture.
