Why am I not getting dolby truhd audio? - Blu-ray Forum

Can anyone help....I have a Pioneer Elite Vsx-91 receiver and just purchased the PS3 because of the new firmware upgrade to DTS HD-master audio on Tuesday, but I have not been able to pick up the Dolby truHD audio from the PS3. Is it even possible from the PS3, it says it has Dolby truHD on the box.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this happening with all of your DD true HD disks?

The PS3 gets the DTS-HD MA upgrade tomorrow.

The PS3 decodes TrueHD and ouputs it as LPCM. Your pioneer will display PCM only. The story is the PS3 lacks the necessary hardware to bitstream HD audio.

Edit: It is bit for bit identical as you pioneer doing the decodes from the TrueHD. The same will be true with DTS-HD MA.

If your not getting surround sound from the PS3, it could be for a number of reasons. If you are bitstreaming your audio w/ the optical out, then you won't be able to get HD audio cuz th PS3 does not bitstream HD codecs (DTS:MA, DDTHD, PCM Uncompressed). If you are using HDMI for audio, the PS3 decodes the HD codecs and sends them to your receiver as PCM multi-channel (your receiver will not display the codecs logo, cuz its outputting as if the audio were an uncompressed audio track).

set PS3 HDMI to Linear PCM.

select the TrueHD audio track at the movie menu screen.

hit the 'display' button on the PS3 BD remote...you should see exactly what audio format is playing.

Just to piggyback on this . . . your receiver will not show TrueHD on its display, but will say PCM. With the PS3, that TrueHD light will never come on.

Reading the responses in this thread is funny. You'd think at this point one post would be enough.
