Default PS3 HD Audio Downconverion?

Hello,

I have a plain old Sony amp that has an optical input. I'm fine with this as DTS 1.5 sounds pretty good to me. With the Xbox 360 HD-DVD addon, you had the option to downconvert to DTS or DD5.1 regardless of whether the HD audio option was DDTrueHD, DD+, or DTSHD. I left the option on DTS5.1 as it sounds better that DD5.1. My question about the PS3 then is what formats can you downconvert to with the different HD audio formats? I know DTS-HD MA contains the DTS core 1.5 downconversion, but what about the other formats like DDTrueHD or uncompressed PCM, or even straight legacy DD5.1? Some of the BD movies that come to mind are the first two Spiderman movies (only DDTrueHD on the disc) and the Ocean's movies (only legacy DD5.1). Can the PS3 downconvert the audio on these titles to DTS 1.5mbps? Thanks!

if you are using optical, this is what you're going to get:

dts hdma = core dts 1.5mbps
dolby TrueHD = separate Dolby Digital at 640 kbps
Uncompressed PCM= 2 channels of audio only, you're better off using the separate lossy audio track

I use an optical connection to my receiver. I believe TrueHD gets downconverted to DTS 1.5 mbps, as it always sounds much better than a Dolby Digital track on another movie.

no, a dolby codec never gets "downconverted" to a DTS codec, and a DTS codec never downconverts to a dolby codec. they are completely different audio tracks. i have never seen a blu-ray with a Dolby TrueHD track accompanied with a DTS 1.5mbps track, if you have, i would like to know what movie it is.

Default Help with doubt.

Now with this wonderful update that allow us take advantage of the dts hd ma codecs with the ps3 I was wondering whether any of you could tell me if a receiver with hdmi 1.3 switcher, repeater capabilities can take advantage of this connection with the ps3 to enjoy the lossless audio options.

Thanks a bunch.

What turboLAZER said. Dolby TrueHD tracks have Dolby Digital 640kbps tagged in the bitstream. So if you select that and you only have optical connection, it'll take the DD signal and pass it to your receiver. The same is true of DTS HDMA and DTS HDHR tracks.

If the receiver only switches/pass through video signal via HDMI but does not use the HDMI audio signal, then no you can't use that to enjoy Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD HR/MA. If it can pass through the HDMI video signal and process the HDMI audio signal, then you're good to go.
