Question Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM connection question?

OK, so long story short I'm waiting on delivery from Dell of a U2713HM. Dell Canada had a 10 mins glitch on their site last week and I grabbed one of these for $500, and after a long and polite email to the head of their english CS about how horrible their french language support site is and how badly they treated me, and, also, how good, polite and professional their english support site is, I ended up with a 2 years extended warranty including adv. Exchange.

'nyways, after many many hours of reading I get the impression that using DisplayPort is the way to go, native RGB and all. Also I know DVI-D will be pretty much at max resolution on this WQHD monitor. I could just test it out but decent DisplayPort cables aren't cheap.

So, my question is: "Is DP the way to go?"

Thats the same monitor I have

DVI is quite fine for it, thats what i use.

on a side note, DP cables can be found cheap, where are you looking that they arent? they shouldnt be anymore money then a DVI cable or HDMI cable.

Hey buddy, so that means I just got myself a great monitor then. I've used WQHD monitors before and they are great, but haven't seen the Dell before, though it's been reviewed by all to rave reviews.

The reason I was asking, was more of a general one as I just might have to use it anyways, using HDMI for my HD DVD and DVI for my cable box (or the other way)

But, like HDMI, there are the different versions of DP and am confused with the different specs you find on different DP cables. Anything specifically I should be looking at buddy.

And since you own one, your thoughts about the monitor, and the extra GPU power needed to drive these well in games?

Well I found some from about $10 but up to $30. All the cheaper ones state ver. 1.1 no audio, and then you have many different maximum throughput, so I'm confused and ain't takin a sales rep opinions on those, unless Monster doesn't make them lol

Edit 2: Oh, buddy, could you link me to a brand that you would recommend? And also, I do like the DP concept very much, to me reads superior to HDMI, at least till HDMI 2 and even then they're just catching up

I use monoprice for pretty much all of my cables

http://www.monoprice.com/StaticConte.../Product/Index

I am quite happy with the monitor, i am spoiled by 2560x1440 and if you have never owned an IPS monitor before thats a nice upgrade as well.

Ironically enough dell is all i buy for my monitors, the ultrasharps are great. The panel is actually made my LG and is used in many different monitors such as Apple and HP.

As far as the demand in gaming....yes... lol. It is almost 2x the pixel count of 1080p so newer games will take a hit. I hope your GPU is up to the challenge lol.

I also like Dell very much, and if it wasn't for a brownout (unprotected, I know and learned) my ancient Ultrasharp 24" would still be used.

For my office/media server/bedroom setup I bought an AOC I2367FH and have to say that IMO nothing in its price range can match it, actually many AOC monitors are top choices in their respective class (If they offered a WQHD monitor I would of seriously considered it as their implementation of the LG panels is 2nd to none for the low prices they ask for).

I should be able to drive it well enough as my new gaming rig is good enough I believe (actually ended up with 2 new builds).

Quick specs

1st new rig started as a rebuild using my Q6600, found a brand new Intel 965 business class mobo. But in the end, it's all brand new (save 1 or 2 HDs) as I sold all of my extras to pay for the new build

Remember this was to be a low cost build for occasional moderate gaming included.

Cooler Master Elite 430 case
Cooler Master 550W gold psu
Asrock 970 extreme 3 REV 2 mobo
AMD X6 FX-6300
Gelid Silencio REV 2
Powercolor HD 7850 2GB (already had)
Seagate 600 120 GB SSD
8 GB dual channel G.skill RipjawzX 2133 (this is extra ram from my gaming rig for now, will wait for ram prices to go down again and will get 16-24 GB later)
AOC I2367FH
Ancient Saitek Eclipse 2
Mionix NAOS 3200 (excellent wired gaming mouse if you don't need tons of shortcuts and macros, in FPS games it rocks)

gaming rig

Corsair Carbid 500
EVGA Supernova Gold 750W psu
MSI Z87-G45
i5-4670K
Corsair I60
16 GB Ripjawz Z 2133
2x Sapphire HD7950 OC
1x Intel 530 120GB (OS and productivity)
1X Vector 128GB (games and media work)
2x 7200.14 1TB in raid 1 (less important games and data)
Logitech 700s
Forget the model of kb and am too lazy to go and check it in the other room lol

Both are not totally finalized yet as I'm still playing with my network final setup scheme.

So yep, curious to see how well the rig will perform on the DEll

The 2x 7950s should do well, i just had 3 of them in my last build so i know them well. Although not perfect i look at it like this

if a card like a 7950 is good for 1080p then figure on needing 2 for 1440p since the pixel count is almost double

I have the EVGA GTX 780 Classified currently and it does damn well for a single card but a couple games like Crysis 3 at 2560x1440 still give it a run for its money

Yikes! Then again C3 is a b*tch to run even at 1080 for many. I know I'm not going to be able to do ultra settings on many games, and will just play them at 1080 if a problem. But I got the cards for $200 each (before rebates) and at that point an equivalent single card solution was actually more expensive. And while AMD's driver support is still lacking behind Nvidia, I've been on board with them since my 8400gx or something like that

Default Side note on AMD

By the way, what is your take on the future of PC gaming with both new consoles adopting AMD tech? Do you think that will give AMD a pretty big boost when the newer games optimized for AMD on the consoles appear for the PC? I personally think this could be huge for them.

You should be in pretty good shape with the 2x 7950s i wouldnt worry about it, if you only had a single one that would be another story haha

not sure, i still dont see them surpasing Intel/Nvidia but it should help them be more competitive for sure.
