Looks like a big step up from the UK blu-ray to me. Actual detail, definition and a grain structure. Can't wait to receive mine and check it out

They both suffer from a range of issues. I am beginning to suspect though that the source materials are to blame for most of them.

There is weird gate wobble at almost every edit point as well as some interesting compression issues in certain scenes. The grain structure also suffers from some compression artifacts (especially in darker scenes where some smearing is evident)

The colours are certainly better represented on the Korean disc and none of the interlacing issues of the UK version are present (obviously as a result of a new progressive scan), but the source is still the same as the UK master given some of the film damage and specs are identical in location.

watched this last night, it's a bizaare disc, generally very good looking but then a strange looking compression artifact will pop up (and its not because of bitrate which is very high). A good example is when the sisters first enter the house, watch the red sweater as the light level changes.

In addition, without any sort of consistency, a lot of the darker scenes have varying levels of noise.

Having said all of that, when it's good, it's really good. Colors and Sharpness are terrific.

I would probably score it a 3.75/5 overall.

Default Region free?

Is the disk region free or not? Yesasia makes the Contents zone releases very confusing. Some are region free like SORUM or some are not like A tale of two sisters.

The US release hasn't been cancelled, just delayed. It will apparently use the same transfer as this Korean release.

Could you please link me to the source that states it will be the same transfer?

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...48#post8286048 I don't know what podcast it was though, but that's where we found out it'll be the same transfer.

There's a comparison of the UK and Korean transfers here - http://dvdprime.donga.com/bbs/view.a...2383648&page=1

Does the Korean Blu have English subtitles for the extras?

No. It would be rare of any Korean blu ray movie to have them on the extras. I tried watching the deleted scenes, and I fell asleep through them because there were no subs and Kim Ji-woon talks through the entire thing (and it was very late).

the korean transfer does look better, but in my opinion it looks like they used some kind of filter (sharpening and noise reduction) and maybe gamma correction, the colors look better but on some screens they look to bright as well.

i would defintly get these bluray but only for a lower price! the difference is not huge enough for that amount of money they want..

there is some EE but nothing that distracting, more distracting are the artifacts that Anamnesis and I mention above.

The disc will play on a Region B player (tested using my Australian PS3), can't confirm Region C playback though...

I have just had a look at the Tartan Asia Extreme DVD and none of the 'film' issues appear to be present on that transfer, so I really would like to know what the deal with these weird movement issues on both blu-rays are. It is a really distracting issue and one I was hoping would be corrected with this release. It is certainly not as bad on the Korean disc as it is on the UK version, but the fact that it is even there at all is not good. It seems we are stuck with it though if the U.S release is going to be using the same master. Shame, because to be honest I would rather watch the upscaled PAL DVD than either blu-ray.... I find it THAT distracting!

are you referring to the 'gate wobble' you describe above? Is that the same as telecine wobble (ie I should be seeing a jitter in the frame at edit points)?

Yeah I am not really sure what the hell it is.... could be telecine wobble, but it does not always effect the whole frame.., I am afraid these kind of things really distract me and each time I notice one it takes me out of the film... which for a movie like this is a big no no... I truly am surprised these kind of defects are deemed acceptable... it almost makes me think they didn't even watch the film running at normal speed on anything larger than a 24" monitor in the studio. I would be interested to know where the print they used for this release came from. A Tale of Two Sisters is one of my favourite films, I have owned (and still do) many incarnations of it:

I am about the check what the print on the R3 Limited Edition DVD looks like....

*EDIT* So the issue is even worse on the R3 DVD... obviously whatever print the Koreans used as a master is where the issue is stemming from... so not sure where Tartan sourced the version they used on the U.K DVD?!

Maybe they didn't use a different print - just cut out a frame or two at the beginning of each shot to "correct" the problem?
