Your TV should be able to tell you what it's receiving, should have an 'i' button or something similar, although unless you've set your PS3 to 480i or are using a VGA/Scart then it should play a BD in 720p or higher by default. In fact it will play in the highest resolution supported by your TV.

The PS3 outputs to whatever the content is eg. if your plaing a DVD it will output 480, If your playing a BD 1080p. Some games are 1080i, 1080p and some are less. If you have a regular TV you won't be able to experiance HD until you have a HDTV. To get the best PQ make sure to use an HDMI cable I recomend the Monster HDMI cable 1000. |

Thanks guys.
I do indeed have an HD set, with HDMI cables between the two. I ask, becuase my PS3 usually autoswitches resolutions. For example, I pop in a regular DVD, or a PS2 game, and while running, I hit the PS button on the controller. The text to 'quit game' (or movie) comes up, and this text displays in 480, as it should. Its less clear, and larger. When I go back to the XMB, it autoswitches back. No problem. This weekend, I popped in Ultimate Avengers, and hit the PS button, and the menu popped up in what seemed to be 480 quality. So I was confused. I'll doublecheck all my settings and connections tonight, and look for any info from the display itself, rather than the PS3 Thanks again. |

![]() ![]() Err, no... Unless you need a very long HDMI cable for your setup, Monster cables or any expensive "premium" cables won't be any difference from a generic no-name brand cables. If you only using 10 or 20 feet HDMI cable, just use a generic HDMI cable and you will do just fine. Same with audio cable. Unless your speakers are like 100' away from the receiver, a generic audio cable will just be fine. Just remember to use a 12 gauge speaker cable for best result. Just google "Monster Cable rip off?" and you'll see what I mean. Of course there will be people who swear that their $100 HDMI cable is better. In some cases that may be right. If you are running huge electronic devices near the cable, they might interfere with the signal, which mean u probably need one of those thick cables that are shielded. But I don't think this is very common. I have a plasma, DVD player, PS3, XBOX 360, DVR, AV Receiver, and Subwoofer around my cables and I never notice anything wrong with the PQ or AQ. |

Just a note, check out nearby CompUSA to see if they have a liquidation sale going on due to the close-out. The one by me, Monster cables are great if you can afford it, I never buy them at retail value because they are the most expensive cables out there but their quality and durability is excellent! unfortunately HDMI cables won't improve PQ over other brands since it's all digital but the component & s-video cables will.
I was able to pick up PS3 HDMI / Optical cables at 50% today at CompUSA! wooo hooo! I love these cables ![]() |

The best setting is to choose "Highest Supported Resolution" w/in Display Settings... I forget the exact wording. If you do it will figure out the the rez of your source and TV.
However if you move your PS3 around to multiple TVs it doesn't seem to be as smart. I often switch from my Sony 1080p SXRD to a Samsung DLP 720p/1080i, and I have to manually adjust the rez on the PS3 down to 1080i or 720p when taking the PS3 to the lower rez TV otherwise nothing will display when you hook it up. So while I have it hooke dup to the 1080p set I have to lower the rez then go hook it up on the lower rez TV. Obviously I have to reset the rez when I go back to the 1080p TV. Luckily I have separate power cables and HDMI cables for each location in the house... makes it much quicker. Eventually I'll buy another PS3 but my wife would kill me if I do that right now. |
