Default Who in their right mind would buy a Blu-ray player right now?

From Engadget HD:

Who in their right mind would buy a Blu-ray player right now?

by Ben Drawbaugh, posted May 2nd 2008 at 11:40AM

There's been a lot of press about how Blu-ray players sales are disappointing right now, with everyone expecting sales to go up after HD DVD threw in the towel. The problem is that HD DVD just recently went belly up and anyone who followed the format war knows that this could be the worst time since Blu-ray was released to buy a Blu-ray player. This is because the latest Blu-ray titles are finally taking advantage of the latest audio codecs and the latest interactive features, but the players that are currently available are not only unable to take advantage of the latest features, but also cost more than the next generation that is due relatively soon. So while it's fun to say the reason people aren't buying is because DVD is good enough, or because the cost is too high; we prefer to think that consumers are smart enough to know that it's better to wait a month or two for the full featured, less expensive players.

It has always been about research.

Those of us who made sound decisions, base don research aren't worried.

Can't go wrong with a PS3 it is easy to upgrade. 1.1 compliant and can decode DTS MA albiet in PCM and with an entry price of $ 400 it is the most inexpensive Blu Ray player around.

"unable to take advantage of the latest features" : general people won't be interested by these features (PiP, intenet activities), maybe try it once or twice and some will wait for the new gen for nothing ... it'd be nice journalists get their info straight to not confuse customers anymore

everyone? funny how this guy is talking about low sales while BD players are hard to find because they are not being manufactured fast enough to meet demand.

I would have no issue with buying a PS3 if I didn't already do that on release day.

Maybe sales are down because it is a reflection of the US economy as a whole....you think?

It would be silly to think otherwise...with gas prices and food prices going up - home sales going down - buying a high-def movie for $34 isn't exactly the tops on priority. DVD sales are down too you know.

Just a thought...now excuse me while I go spend my $1800 tax bonus that just came in today on Blu-Ray movies

Sony has given us a great solution that evolves with the technology and they are committed to evolve PS3. I wonder why they did not mention this.

I can understand what he's saying. But then again, the consumer really isn't that smart. We here on the boards are the ones who really care about things like audio codecs and BD-live.

Even HD DVD users didn't access the online features that much. At it's heyday, i think I remember it was something like 30%* of all players accessed the online servers on a regular basis. I think they are just trying to hype up the whole profile thing uselessly.

* - I'm not 100% sure on the number, but it was on HD DVDs official website before they pulled down the main page. So unfortunately I can't look it up.

isnt this a quiet time for consumer AV products in general. Heck universal went to sleep at this time peroid for HDDVD in the early days because its a traditional slack time period.
Blu ray will have its time later in the year when people are less concerned about there summer holidays and summer fun amd more concrened about livin up those autum/winter nights.
and yeah sure, some people are waiting for BD live players, infact many are and they will get there wish soon enough, in the mean time the savvy few purchased a PS3.

I just dont get these articules that seem to think blu ray has to be a sudden and instant mass consumer product. Formats that went before it took there jolly time to reach the masses, so why must blu ray be any different .

I don't, but that's definitely something not everybody thinks about. I'd love to have a BD-drive in my laptop.
