Default Ok, so I'm wanting to go HD...

I'm currently in the process of saving money for a HDTV, and at $6.70 an hour... it's taking a while. I'm doing this for a couple of reasons:
A: I'm planning to pick up a PS3 later this year, which equals Blu-Ray... which equals I need a HDTV.
B: My TV is old, and is starting to have ugly black lines in the background. Most noticeable on light colored screens.

So then, what I'm looking at currently can be seen here:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099396990967
I saw it in the paper last weekend, and went to the store to check it out. It looks nice, and won't bankrupt me. (Did I mention I make $6.70 an hour?!)
I was just wondering if anybody has any experience with this particular set, or if there's any reason to steer clear of it.
The people on this forum seem to know a lot about HD in general, so any insight?

Welcome to the forum!

I say go for it! Samsung has really stepped up their game in the HDTV market. My first HDTV a few years ago was a Samsung and it was a nice set, from what I've read they're much better now. I think for that price you'd be getting a very nice TV. Plus not only does it have HDMI it's got HD built in so there's no need for a separate STB like the two I have.

That's actually one of the reasons I was looking at this one. If I can save a few bucks by getting HD Built In, then save I shall.

Thanks for the welcome.

Ok, I have another question... just because I'm new to the whole HD thing. The TV I'm looking at says its' maximum resolution is 1080i... then I see some sets that are labeled as 1080p. Is there a big difference in the two?

Here's an article that might be of help:

I think it's interesting that the guy feltyou'd be hard pushed to notice the difference between a 1080i and 720p picture on 50" screen. I would have thought at that screen size there would have been a noticeable improvement in detail. Only having a 26" lcd, (1366/768), I'm starting to wonder whether I'd notice a significant improvement using HD-DVD/Blu-Ray at 720p than standard dvds at 576p!?

Yanya

I have a loewe aconda 38" set I bought a while ago. Those familiar with the loewe name know the quality of set I have. It does the standard 480i/p, 540p, and 1080i and I have seen both 1080i on my screen and 1080p on a DLP screen. Since the actual sets were of different size and technology, my opinion is not really one to be the de-facto in whether you should go for a 1080p set instead of 1080i. Quite frankly, I love the way 1080i looks on my direct-view from either HD cable or DVHS. 1080p equates to more money you will have to spend and to really get the benefits you would want to get a large set. Since you are on a budget constraint, this would not be an option.

I also wanted to point out that that set you saw on best buy is actually on close-out at SEARS. At least in my location. During my usual browse when shopping with my son, I checked out the sets at SEARS and noticed that same exact Samsung you mention on closeout for $630 I believe. I live in Northern VA, so I'm not sure if this is a local thing or national. You may want to give your local Sears a call and ask them about it. As far as quality goes, I saw one of these calibrated properly for High Definition and it really looks great. I can't say the same for Standard Definition sources though.

This is really a flaw with a lot of HD sets out there. To fix it you would need to invest in a good video processor/scaler. By then, however, if you are buying a Video processor/scaler you wouldn't be buying a Samsung as a display and would need significantly more money. This is more on the high-end of things.

Anyway, good luck and let us know what you end up buying or if you have any other thoughts about a different display.

I saw it in Circuit City's Ad this week, and it's on Close Out there as well. Go figure, I pick a TV and everybody decides to stop carrying it. I'll keep SEARS in mind though... $630 sounds like a good deal. Currently I have about $200 saved up. I'll be there in no time! (And by no time, I mean a couple of months.)

PS: Your name reminds me of Tenchi Muyo!.

Well, my old TV had a stroke! Everything was given a nice dark tint to it, and with a little help from my sister for my birthday, plus a considerable chunk of my own cash... I now have my TV! Sadly, my PS2 is being a jerk and still letterboxes everything.
