STORY

Cosmos, the goddess of harmony. Chaos, the god of discord. Reigning from distant realms, the two gods had gathered warriors from all lands to lead them in savage war.

IGN story:

The original announcement of Dissidia included confirmation that Warrior of Light from the original Final Fantasy and Zidane Tribal from FFIX would appear as playable characters. It was also revealed that Kuja, a villain from FFIX would make an appearance, although playable or not playable was not confirmed.

Thanks to the trailer, we have a hint about a fourth character. The closing shot of the trailer had a familiar CG scene of a familiar Final Fantasy villain wielding a lengthy sword against a fiery background. That's right, it's Sephiroth! The deliberate drama that surrounded his appearance in the trailer suggests that the FFVII villain will be playable, although we'll of course have to wait for official confirmation to be sure.

TGS '07: Square Enix shows all in closed mega-theater

Dissidia: Final Fantasy's TGS trailer was based on the video shown a few months back at Square Enix Party 2007, but with one big difference: Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII and Firion from Final Fantasy II were seen going against each other in combat, confirming yet another two Final Fantasy heroes that will be in the game. The game is still announced as a work in progress with no release date announced.

IGN: Final Fantasy Dissidia Rules Tokyo

Hey, who needs Powerstone 3?

With all these formula twists, I was left questioning if there was ever an actual pre-existing formula for Dissidia's gameplay. Rather than trying to adapt the Final Fantasy characters into some existing fighting game formula, the designers of Dissidia seem to have attempted to create an original fighting engine around the Final Fantasy characters -- at least the characters as they'd probably combat one-another in a Tetsuya Nomura movie.

On top of what appears to be a complex combat experience for single and multiple players, Dissidia also manages to push the PSP to new visual heights. The game is a visual feast, with detailed combatant models, and plenty of lighting effects. Definitely a step above Crisis Core, which already had some thinking that the PSP really was a portable PS2.

If you, like me, were expecting a quick cash-in with Dissidia to take advantage of the popularity of the Final Fantasy characters and all that work Square Enix clearly put into developing its Crisis Core engine, you, like me, were wrong. Dissidia has the potential to be a rare breath of fresh air in the fighting genre, Final Fantasy characters or not. I've only played it for 20 minutes, but I can't wait to sample the full Final Fantasy fighting experience.
