Agreed, I've changed the title to "Universal going neutral?".

Frankly I don't like the idea that this "info" is coming from Pioneer, not Universal.

Agreed.

It would be a pity to get the same reputation as the HD-DVD zealots.

Glad to see the thread title changed.

Andy Parsons is the head of BD promotions. But, up to now, I haven't seen a deliberate falsehood come from him or Pioneer.

If untrue, this could only be called a deliberate lie, don't you think?

You mean like a project Pyro thing? The thought crossed my mind, but I can't imagine Heise going for some news that is from an utterly unknown source. The speculation could go on forever... until we know if it's real or not.

Rob voices a legitimate concern but so far, as best I know, Parsons and that BDA side have been fairly clean and devoid of the blatant lies and smearing that we see from the HD-DVD camp on a regular basis.

Just to keep things clear: it was never said that Pioneer or the BDA made such a statement. They just said that some reps from Pioneer mentioned something in a press conference. That's a pretty open statement.

I would have loved to hear the press conference and the name of the person giving it.

Well, if Universal is reading this, and it's even being considered, please know that here is one individual who will welcome you with an open wallet!

Default Too soon to celebrate

As much as I would like to believe this rumour, it is at this point just a rumour. Also, the pessimist in me can easily come up with a bleak scenario:

- Universal announces that it will release some Blu-ray movies... in the form of THD format in which the Blu-ray side is limited to 25GB.
- Universal continues to do the HD-DVD side first and just does a quick and dirty port to the Blu-ray side with no optimization and no enhanced audio.
- The web flames on and MS paid bloggers spread the faith that as expected the Blu-ray side is of poorer quality, bla bla bla.
- The HD-DVD fans use the sale of THD and keep counting them as HD-DVD sales no matter who the customers are.
- Years later, pure HD-DVD are gone but there are still two formats: THD (from neutral studios) and Blu-ray (from Sony studios).

Please note that I do not wish any of this to happen. I just believe that being ready mentally for less than ideal scenarios can prevent being extremely disappointed later on.

^^ I'm with you, I don't wish for any of these scenarios to come to life... and the Optimism in me says; Once Uni drops HD-DVD, than there will be no reason for HD-DVD to exist.

Except of course for those whom have already bought into it. But, if it has no exclusivity, why would it still exist? Then again, there is no reason is should exist now...

That was the point I was trying to make powerSURG, the rumour is that they are dropping HD-DVD EXCLUSIVITY, not HD-DVD altogether, hence my pessimistic scenarios. Some people around here are getting too excited and jumping from dropping exclusivity to dropping the format altogether.

A good example of a company pretending to support both but often hurting Blu-ray is Warner. I could easily see Universal being worse than Warner.
