Default Why no PS2 playback?

When I bought my PS3 for $800 dollars, I was horrified to find out that it doesn't support PS2 games. What the hell? Why have they done this? If I was ever going to play games on it, I'd be playing PS2 games. What a stupid decision! Would it really have taken them so much bloody time and effort to support PS2 playback? Arrrghh!!!! *explodes*

What model do you have? The 40 and 20 gigs don't have support, the 60 is fully backwards compatible and the 80 is partially compatible through emulation. The reason being in the 40 and 80 was to make it cheaper by not having the emotion engine chip.

20gig has the same emulation support as the 60.

Yep, I'm from Australia and bought my PS3 for $800. Although it came with Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and an extra controller. Still, without both of those, the price for a PS3 and nothing else was about $700. I bought it since Tools of Destruction on its own is $109 and the controller is $40 on its own and I'd be saving $49.

After paying $800 for it, you'd think the least they could've done with it and 40 gig PS3s in general was include a PS2 emulator. I asked the guy who was selling them and he said they supposedly surveyed quite a few people asking them if they'd want a PS2 emulator included. According to him, they said no.

Right.

Right.
Well, on the upside, the PS3 emulation on the 80GB is entirely software based. That implies that there is a possibility that the 40GB might (by some rare chance) be firmware upgradeable to include software emulation in the future.

Yeah, hopefully they'll include it in a firmware update.

Actually, it's 1/2 and 1/2; 80G model has a PS2 graphics card with some extra VRAM while using software in place of the EE.

I've often theorized that they'll bring back full hardware BC later on when PS2's are less common in stores.

I was almost interested in getting a white PS3, but I don't want it w/o the PS2 BC. I may not put any PS2 games in it (since it would be a secondary), but it would still bug me to not have it.

I have a 80GB and could care less about BC. When I want to play a PS2 game I put it in my PS2 not PS3.

Real estate is very precious under my big TV right now. I had to box up my XBOX, even though I have some XBOX games that the 360 cannot play.

You're saying the exact opposite of what you're trying to say.

There's always room for the little slim PS2.

While I think the real reason for Sony taking out BC is to simply cut manufacturing costs, there could be another reason.

Been on the PSN store lately? See the PSone games? Well why give something for free when you can charge for it?

Yeah there isn't that many PSone games and zero PStwo games. But i believe over time eventually we will see Sony's promise of every PSone and PStwo game available for d/l and for a fee.

Funny thing is if all my games were to become available for d/l and were a decent price (as in a $1 each). I wouldn't hesitate to buy them all again and sell my physical copies. I hate having all my games take up as much space as they do.

I’m sure this is the reason behind Sony taking out BC.
Xbox 360 and Wii already have games downloads. I’m not sure if you’ll see them for a $1, more like $4-$10 like the other consoles.

After all cutting manufacturing costs sounds better than we're taking out BC so we can sell you the games again..
