Read the entire article to find out exactly how the corporate mentality is beginning to assault our consumer rights. It's bad enough that media moguls are single-handedly manipulating the content that we are exposed to through the mediums under their control. Now they want to expand into one of the only remaining realms where global free speech is acceptable. CORPORATIONS WILL BE THE DEATH OF THE HUMAN RACE!!! |

there will always be somebody that will offer speeds that are aceptable for gaming, there is too many people out there who game onlne for somebody not to take advantage of a growing market. yeah, some companies might start doing this, and you might have to switch internet service provides, but there will always be somebody offering a package for you to game on. im not worried about this at all. seems to be just in europe right now too.

I don't believe it matters.
I feel exactly the same way about this I do about downloads removing all physical media. After it happens, some enterprising company would come along and offer physical media. Their sales would be through the roof...so much so that all other companies would go back to physical media. I believe the same thing would happen here. Some ISP would say "screw you" and do this correct. They'd make so much money that companies like Virgin would have no choice but to reverse their decision, or kill themselves off. |

Normally, I would agree with posters here that 'another company' would come along and save the day by offering a competing service.
Unfortunately, in this particular situation, that will not and can not happen. Internet infrastructure in many locales is controlled by at best two 'companies' (it's usually DSL vs. Cable, for example); however, in a great many areas this is not the case. In fact, most suburban areas and the like that are not near downtown metro areas only have one option... Cable (as is the case for me, unfortunately). If I want high speed internet, I have to use Comcast Cable. It is my only option and I pay through the nose for it because of that fact. DSL is not an option (and I even live closest to the largest 'hub' for internet backbone connectivity in the world! Salt Lake City! All pipes meet here!). The phone system simply can't handle it in the suburbs here. So, we get cable as a choice... or dial-up. There is no one who can save us from this situation that Virgin is trying to create if it goes down (we already have major problems with Comcast cutting people off for using too much bandwidth each month doing almost nothing... they even ban many common peer2peer ips!). We had one option, but city officials were too short sighted and didn't want the financial outlay to show on their 'term' in office to do it. Pete Ashdown (owner of Xmission Internet, the largest ISP here) wanted to create the countries first totally city run fiber network to all homes (yes, we would have had 30+mb/sec for less than $30/month... HD video would be no problem). Internet would have become like a utility (as it should be) basically meaning bullshit like what Virgin wants to do could never happen. Anyway... Be afraid, because if this goes down. We all lose in one way or another. |

Another company would come along. They have no need to right now, because they have no reason to. Your local company is not so bad that it matters. As soon as something like this happens, some company WILL come along.
The biggest problem with this even happening is the contracts between ISPs and the backbone. Either the favoritism won't end up mattering as it won't be a big enough difference in speed for people to notice, or those contracts will be violated and lawsuits galore will commence. |
