I'm going a little off-topic and you're weren't even asking me the question but one thing I like about lgans316's threads for things like this, is that they act almost like a keyword or tag. A lot of times, it's hard to find the main review or impressions thread for a movie (especially so for certain titles/words) so always having "reviews" and "reaction" in the title makes it much easier to find (search for) the appropriate threads.

Of course, I say that and then noticed his thread title for Region B Signs doesn't follow his normal convention. Oh well...but maybe it was done that way to keep it separate from the US thread.

Gotcha...

Also for the 24-Bit vs. the 16-Bit. Technically, to lgans316, wouldn't the U.S. ones be imports? And the other ones be domestic for you since you're in Japan? Just out of curiosity, what was the point in changing the 24-Bit to 16-Bit on the Japanese versions? Aren't they from the same studio's? That's really, REALLY dumb they'd change it for the worse for Japan.

or it could be so that they could fit a lossless Japanese track as well?

That could be. So they'd have enough space for an English and a Japanese lossless/uncompressed track.

Importing has nothing to do with that.

You can listen to Spider-Man 3. PCM is 16 bit & Dolby TrueHD soundtrack is 24 bit.

In comparing the 2 the 24 bit Dolby TrueHD soundtrack sounds alot better to me.

If you have the title try it yourself.

On the shelf at Blockbuster? Well if I saw that and then rented it, they probably would have never gotten it back as I would have just kept it with the reviews I'm seeing!

BTW, the only thing I would care about the audio on the BD is whether or not it is any better than the US SD DVD, not whether it is 24 or 16 bit. How about a +1 for that?

Just got through watching the Signs (UK import) and loved it. PQ is much better than the DVD but is a little soft at times (probably intentional though). The SQ is great. I used the 5.1 PCM (48khz).

You are one of the few from reviews I've seen to give it those scores. Thanks for your opinion as mine should be coming today or tomorrow. I hope I see and hear what you did!

It wasn't my attention to view the whole movie last night. I guess that will tell folks something about the quality. I got so engrossed with it, I just kept watching.

This easily beats the SD DVD. There is some difficult material though to deal with what with many outdoor and indoor scenes at night that come across on the dark side but they were handled well IMHO.

This movie isn't packed with lots and lots of action scenes but the audio kicks in quite nicely where applicable.

I'll give the same scores as the OP. Those preodering ahead of any reviews will not be sorry. Patience now is the issue to actually get it and then have the time to watch it but it will all be worth it, trust us!!

Man you got me pumped now...I'm waiting for the July release of it here in Japan. I could easily get the regular English version of course but I collect all my Blu-Ray in their glory of Japanese editions here. They look like collectors editions with the cool writing and everything Plus I can use them to brush up on my Japanese. For me, the captions and Japanese audio are worth the price of the discs alone.

Same with V for V coming out next week and iRobot that just got released. Really looking forward to The Island as well.

But I also pay for these releases at about $35-$40 USD a pop.

Do you know if the UK and US versions are identical (except for maybe language differences)? I'm thinking I should have waited for some sort of confirmation on that instead of buying the US version tonight. Just started watching the US version and the menu is the same, same audio options (except for language differences) so I have a feeling they're going to be identical.

The sound kicks when it needs to. The scenes in the fields are amazing. And the all of the stuff with Aliens running around just go rght around the room. I jumped at one point.

I also had it cranked at the begining and forgot about the scare with the dog bark. Nearly shat myself. Great movie. Nice to see young Johnny Cash as well.

Speaking of the man in black, anyone hear when Walk the Line on blu will ever come out?

I expect the U.K versions of Signs to feature slightly different spoken languages and subs with a language selection menu in the beginning.
I was mostly interested in the PQ/SQ, basically hoping they're the same so I could get rid of one of them. I've been trying to compare them and I think they're the same. Initially, I thought the US version was a little more clear and had a little more pop but I think it's my imagination. It's not immediate when I'm having to switch the discs and load again every time, making it difficult to compare. So, I tried checking bitrates in a scene or two and they seemed pretty similar (maybe even the same). I also checked a few places that have white speckles and they occur in the same places as well. One minor difference (just in the menu though) is that the black box over the play menu selection in the US version, shows the running time for the movie while it's just black on the UK version for me. The audio selections are a little different for the non-english selections but that's about all I seeing that's different (oh, except for more previews, blu-ray ads, and warning messages on the US version).

Edit: Yeah, the UK version provides a whole screen full of languages when the disc starts.
