I've had the US sets of the series for years. The show never really kicked off over here, so I could see why Warner UK didn't bother with a UK release until now.

I had a feeling the UK wouldn't see a blu-ray release, so I've gone ahead and pre-ordered the US version. That UK complete collection set looks really nice though.

Great is a bit of a stretch. It's very enjoyable. But it is also very generic. And totally ridiculous.

Can't wait to see the movie.

Was this ever on UK TV as that tends to be why the UK misses out of the DVD release as the rights owner holds it back hoping to sell to TV first.

That was one of the reasons UK consumers were screwed out of the Breaking Bad DVDs and then BDs for many years although Sony finally relented.

It's neither generic nor ridiculous. There's nothing out there quite like it, so how can it be generic?

It showed in the UK on e4 many years back, from what I remember.

I looked this up the other day, the show has aired on both Living (now Sky Living) and E4.

Are the US and German Blu-ray releases of the Veronica Mars movie both going to be region free? Thought they would be region free. Checked the Blu-ray.com page for the US Blu-ray release, and it stated it would be Region A.

Should be, but Germany is RB like UK so that will definitely work.
Warner are not known for locking titles.
I went for US as currently cheapest and will have English language packaging.

Can't wait to watch it though for the first time

.

It's a detective show. How much more generic can you get? A spunky teenage girl character who can play with the big boys? Err... Buffy? And the first season's arc... ever see Twin Peaks?

As for ridiculous, it is. I don't want to post any spoilers but many of the plots are completely unbelievable - especially given the age of the characters and the seriousness of the crimes. Season Two I'm looking at you.

Again, that's not to say I didn't enjoy it. And I will be purchasing the blu ray on release day. But let's not pretend that it was something more than it was.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Your arguments are a stretch to say the least. You could say that any show with a strong young female lead is like Buffy if you wanted to. It's not like any other detective show out there and it subverts a lot of old tropes. The first season is nothing like Twin Peaks so I don't know what you were watching!

Is Amazon the cheapest place for the complete set? It's very annoying to have to buy the movie on blu seperately from the States.

Yes, but remember this is the first official UK release of the TV shows on DVD, and the price is similar to buy just one or two of the seasons on DVD from the US or elsewhere in Europe. Therefore you can think you are getting the movie on DVD for free.

If you just want the movie ignore the UK boxset and buy the standalone movie BD from the US.

The
[Show spoiler]all-American victim and her life revealed to be not as wholesome as one thinks through the investigation
is very Twin Peaks.

Obviously you are a big fan and like all big fans, do not like your show criticised. As I have said more than once, I very much enjoyed watching VM but it is far from unique. And it is ridiculous and unbelievable, whether you choose to accept that or not. I am intrigued though, what exactly does it subvert so well? And how is it not like other detective shows?

Thanks malcy. Yeah I guess I'll get the UK DVD boxset but import the blu of the movie as I'd rather have that in hi def as it's going.

Oh don't get me wrong, it's not perfect. The third season is a real let down, for example, and some of the characters are rather dull and their storylines don't really go anywhere (Wallace's girlfriend and his mother, for example).

It subverts the 'Betty and Veronica' idea by having Veronica as the girl torn between two romantic interests - the dull, safe option (Duncan) or the wild, passionate option (Logan). Certain episodes also subvert tropes
[Show spoiler]one that particularly comes to mind is the episode where Veronica chooses the wrong side; she defends a teacher accused of sleeping with a student, only to discover he's a total sleaze by the end
. It just has a different tone to any other detective series, and not just because of the protagonist. It has the constant theme of the warring classes, strong multi-layered arcs (at least the first two seasons), and interesting character dynamics, particularly between the teens and their parents. I guess it's the amalgamation of all those elements that makes it different to me.
