Default What if blu had lost; concerning PS4

Okay, so this is something i've been thinking of the last few days and I am wondering what everyone thinks.

Since all PS3 games are on blu-ray discs, what would have happened if the format war had gone the other way?
When PS4 came around, would sony have had to just leave backwards compatibility out or would they produce dead-hardware so we could play our PS3 games?

Maybe I am missing an easier solution (I'm not super knowledgeable on hardware)

I don't think the PS3's use of BD and the success of Blu-ray the movie format are related. What else was there to get more than 9GB? The good thing about Blu-ray "the movie format" has created is cheaper parts and media for the PS3 and games.

they would continue to use the format, more space than dvds and hddvds. Just be more expensive to produce

It was not possible for Blu-Ray to lose, so this is truly a meaningless question.

Well, let me rephrase, it was not possible for HD DVD to win. The only question was would it drag Blu-Ray down with it.

This is akin to saying "What would have happened had Microsoft decided not to release the 360 without more hardware testing." Since it wasn't going to happen, there is no answer.
