Default PS3 and Dolby TrueHD

I know it can support it now.. but do I need to set my PS3 to "bitstream" to get this codec to work?

It is currently set to Linear PCM... I heard awhile ago that to get TrueHD to work you need to change this to TrueHD.. is that true?

If your receiver have HDMI, just set to PCM.

When I set it to that.. my receiver reads: "MPCM + PLIIxMovie".

If I have it on bitstream it says "(Dolby Symbol) D + PLIIxMovie".

PS3 (HDMI Audio) must be set to Linear PCM.

Press the select button and it will show you what audio codec is being played.

You want that first one, MPCM = MultiChannel PCM, PLIIxMovie is the listening mode your receiver is set to. Remember to select True HD from the language/audio setup option in the blu-ray menu.

So then it is ideal to keep the PS3 always set to Linear PCM for HDMI output?

Edit: Ah ok great, thanks. I see it is now using Dolby TrueHD... but when I chose PCM 5.1 it was playing in a higher Mbps????

PCM 5.1 was 5 Mbps vs. TrueHD's 2.0 Mbps

The PS3 decodes the True HD and DTS HD it self and sends it to the reciever as LPCM. The reciever will read Multichannel. If you really want your reciever to decode the TrueHD or DTSHD and display the correct icon you will need a standalone BD player that can bitstream the audio, but you will be getting the same sound as the PS3 when it decodes and sends the sound as LPCM.

PCM uses a fixed bitrate, TrueHD is variable.

It's alright I don't need the receiver to show the correct codec as long as I know it's right.

TrueHD and DTS HD MA are like ZIP file on a computer. In contain the same document once uncompressed but it's smaller

Generally it's 40% smaller at the end

So they are compressed formats as opposed to Lossless PCM which is uncompressed?

Or are they like containers and LPCM is a codec?

To me, I see the higher bitrate in PCM and I would think that means PCM is higher quality.

No, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are LOSSLESS, PCM is uncompressed. What that means is that TrueHD and HD MA get rid of the extra bits of information that are useless.

The PS3 will take these, decode them into PCM and send the PCM track to your reciever. There should be no difference between a PCM track and a TrueHD one (or DTS-HD MA for that matter) provided they're the same bitdepth.

They are Loseless.

Loseless : Compressed, then uncompressed to redo the original PCM

It work like SACD and DVDAudio worked... DVD Audio was MLP, witch is a Loseless compression

When you download a 2.5meg .exe on you're computer and install an application that weight 10 meg. That application was loselessly compressed into 2.5meg exe. When you 'execute' it's installation it then recreated the original files witch losing any data..

Easy thing : a digital file look like this

10011100111001110111111001111001110

The loseless application remove the 0 and leave the 1. It know it's order due to a Table that it create. When you uncompress it, it replace the 0 where they were originally so you end up with the original file again

That was a general example..

So as for audio quality then, there is no difference? It's just a benefit for disc space since TrueHD is a smaller size but contains the same quality? Isn't it a waste then to have PCM AND TrueHD on the same disc?

Thanks for the continued assistance.

I think your confusing the guy. It matters not if its compressed or uncompressed, it can still be lossless. Compressed is just zipping up a file, but once you uncompress it its still lossless. It all depends on the codec and if it were lossless before it was compressed.

Something like DD5.1 is not lossless, because it loses half the information from the master in the first place.

It is a waste to have PCM and True HD on the same disc. Even though most of the time if there is a PCM track as well as a True HD track, I will usually go for the PCM, the sound on PCM sounds richer.
