Ok. i wasnt sure where to post this because it could also go under Home Theater discussion. Anyway...I have an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver along with my trusty PS3. The receiver can decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio formats. I have tried to set the PS3 to both Linear PCM and Bitstream outputs, but the receiver will not detect the TrueHD track as being TrueHD. It says it is only Dolby Digital 5.1.
Can anybody who owns this receiver and has gotten the +TrueHD red light to light up on the receiver tell me all of your settings? Or at least the ones that need be changed? Thanks a lot. |

then why does the PS3 have a "TrueHD" logo on it? The PS3 can decode TrueHD and send it as linear PCM, so your ONKYO is not going to see it as TrueHD, it should see it as Linear PCM. Your PS3 should be set to "Linear PCM" for HDMI audio out, also make sure you do the auto-detect or tell the PS3 what your receiver can and cant do under audio settings. In the end, the receiver should see it as PCM. Good luck, and let us know what happens!

ok I set it up as linear pcm like you said and the receiver does indeed see it as a pcm track. When I press the display key on my PS3 remote it says that it is in fact Dolby TrueHD. But this I already knew.
Will the possible future update that would allow the PS3 to bitstream Dolby TrueHD fix this issue between the receiver and the PS3? |

from what I read, unfortunately, no. I know, I bought a receiver with decoding capability that I dont use as well. But, who knows, it might happen eventually! They are probably going to work on DTS-HD internal decoding first. It is said that the sound is better if you audio equipment does the decoding, not the player, so, hopefully they do bitstream eventually!

Are there any other standalone players that CAN bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio. I was thinking about getting my 2nd Blu-ray player this Christmas anyway. Any help on this?
Oh and by the way thanks for the quick response before and your advice. You were very helpful. Thanks again, CJS Last edited by CJS234; 11-10-2007 at 01:03 AM. Reason: forgot to thank DefTechPioElite |

LOL... I don't know what I was thinking. Sorry for the misinformation above. I'm in the middle of watching 'Cars' on Blu-ray. And for those of you who have it, at least you'll understand how I could have not been as focused on what I was saying as I should have been.
![]() P.S. 'Cars' is by far the best Blu-ray I've seen yet. And I own 100+!!! Even the menu design of the disc makes me quiver with joy. |

From all the info I've been able to obtain the HDMI chipset in the PS3 is incapable of sending either Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA as a bitstream.
So the solution to the DTS problem is for DTS to provide Sony a working software decoding solution the same way Sony does for SACD. So far there is none for either the PS3 or PC, only hardware (like your receiver). Normally I have my audio HDMI out set to "bitstream". When I play a disc with Dolby TrueHD I set it manually to "PCM" output. You can do this by pressing the triangle button during playback. The PS3 will then decode the TrueHD track to multichannel PCM. |

Yes there are 3. The Samsung 1400, Panasonic 30, and the Pioneer 95. They can all bitstream everything up to DTS HD MA. Where the new Sonys 500 and 2000 can only do up to TrueHD but it is rumored they will get a FW update to do MA. |

The Sammy 1400 can, I have it and the pioneer 94thx reciever. I do think there is a big different when I bitstream to my pioneer then when I play it with my ps3 pcm. I have to played a lot of movies TrueHD and then pcm with the ps3. It seems louder when it is bitstream to Pioneer and let it do the work. P.S I love Fox's DTS MA audio tracks they are nice. Old movies are all new again, the Wow is back.

As to the overall sound I could not agree more. But there are alot of naysayers here that donot believe it. Those that do are growing but the PS3 is still the largest base of players and since they cannot hear it most are in denial. |

Ok ok...so the PS3 doesn't decode the TrueHD track? When I played 300, the track said "Dolby TrueHD" now that was because I was not using a digital audio cable. When I used the digital cable it wouldn't decode Dolby TrueHD..so what gives? I'm confused with all this now

The newer players will send the signal via bitstream to the receiver and let the receiver decode it. What cable are you using? Optical? HDMI? |

As this is my 1st input, I too have a question about hooking up the ps3. I am using the optical cable to a Sony STR-DB810. The disc reports dolby truhd 5.1 and AVC ~ mbps, but my tuner is only giving me 2 channel 48kbs. What is the proper setting for the ps3 to output the 5.1 that the amp will interpret correctl? Sorry if this is a duh!!!!
