Default Sony doesn't know how to fight

Are they at all concerned about winning this war?

Every Sony Blu-ray disk should have a sticker/flag on it that says, "You will not find this movie on any other HD format," or something similar to that.

The consumer needs to be reminded about this every time they see a big title like Pirates, a Bond movie, etc.

Well, Sony's new BD player comes out at the end of July. While that's quite far off, compared to this present HD-DVD player deal, maybe they'll cook up something when they release that.

I do agree, they need to counter this move. Everyone was talking about the possible $299 HD-DVD player, well, here it is.

No studio has a format-exclusive sticker or logo on their cases from what I've seen.. and yet it's only Sony Pictures that don't know how to fight? How'd you work that one out?

I think Green said Sony because they're the principal creator of Blu-ray.

In marketing, you need to take advantage of every possible angle.

Sony is missing out on a huge opportunity if they aren't letting the consumer know -- at every turn -- when they are offering an exclusive item.

Something like:

"A Blu-ray Exclusive -- Not available on any other High Definition Format."

The other studios are welcome to add those stickers too, of course, but I'm just being realistic. I don't know if the other studios who are exclusive to BR (at this time) would be willing to put such a sticker on all exclusive disks.

It would be great if they were.

Why is Sony not doing this?

Default maybe

maybe sony is just confident they have the better product ,more people buy dvds in fall/winter and mew models will be out b4 then maybe they will gear a advertisement increase by then ,though you`re right there is nothing like tooting your own horn maybe a sticker that obvious might help?

Sounds like a good idea.

I'm sure sony or any other studio could come up with a few reasons they have not done this yet.
For example they may say a large part of blu-ray consumers know what is exclusive to BR, because of places like this

Have bought a few with stickers on saying on 'PlayStation 3 Compatable' but that's about as far as it goes!

Maybe they just haven't thought of it yet.

Another thing I think they should do is highlight how their disks are very scratch-resistant.

That is one of my favorite things about BR.

It's time to start emailing Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, and others about how they need to counter this price cut effectively. I'll be emailing Sony now.

Well since they're not doing it, and YOU ARE a Blu-ray supporter, no? it is your royal duty as a film lover to educate as many friends you can and even strangers you encounter in your local BD selling stores when buying, about this.

I think no one in Blu-land thinks that they'll change. So "(at the time)" is kinda superfluous!

Yeah. All BD is Sony Sony Sony's fault. Even Nordic too-thin cases!

The only good thing is that the $299 players are the first-gen players, so they're probably just trying to clear those out.

Why be so defensive about it?

Is this not a forum where even BR supporters can debate things?

Does every thread on here have to read like a PR release for Sony, or else it gets deleted, renamed, or buried in the ever-growing HD Rant thread?

Incase anyone has not figured it out - Sony does have a "My Caviar Cost 20 thousand dollars" (high and mighty) atitude.

Sony - needs to do something ASAP! Why Sony? Well it is their format.

I don't think BLU-RAY supporters need to panic. BD is winning the format war, Toshiba is cutting prices in an act of desperation. By years end with BD players as low as $300, and with major Sudio support the game should be over by the time Universal goes neutral.

I agree. Usually when a company is slashing prices on their product this early in their existence, its a sign of desperation to move product. i think the horizon in the future will be blu(e).

Agreed. However...

Am I the only one here with HD-MINI DISC, from SONYŽ? Yes? No? Never heard of it?

Or, is there anyone here who had/has still, a BETA MAX? Two formats, that were superior, that failed, because SONYŽ is either greedy, or stupid, or a little of both, when it comes to selling their product.

I love SONYŽ gear. I have in my house, the following.
  • 3 DVD players
    a Dual Tape Deck
    a Turntable
    a handheld HD-MINI DISC player/recorder
a HD-MINI DISC pro level recorder, with keyboard.
    a CD-R recorder
    three different amps
    two HD TV's.
    two plain jane TV's
    a BETA MAX
    a VHS player
    A Dream System
    Headphones
    a SACD 5.1 Player
    PS2
    BLU-RAY
I think I got it all. Point being, I am a Sound Engineer and I find SONYŽ really quite satisfying...but frustrating, when it comes to their business designs. I hope they get the BLU-RAY format sold correctly. Or it will be another failed format that I own of theirs.

A lot of ads are "On DVD and Blu-ray disc", and even some are "On Blu-ray disc and DVD". The cases people see in the stores are obviously and clear emboldened with the Blu-ray logo, and usually have a sticker "For use only on Blu-ray Players and Drives" (or something like that).

I'd think "not available for other HD formats" would do two things:

Advertise the competition (there are other HD formats to consider?)
Taunt the competition

Neither would seem to be wise.

Gary

BD may lose some battles on the way to victory, but I'm convinced that Sony will do everything in there power to achieve a single format HD disc. If the HD optical disc ever reaches above a niche market it will be because Sony offered the best product, best price, and best software.
