Default Watch TCM - On Demand films/recommendations

TCM introduced WatchTCM, a great on demand site, early this year. You can access it through your cable or satellite provider for free and the channel posts (almost) every movie aired on TCM for 7 days following the original air date. So you can watch them at your leisure on demand.

The list of movies currently available

The schedule of upcoming movies

With about a dozen films being added every day, I wanted to make this thread so members can recommend certain films that they love and/or feel are essential to the appreciation of film as they become available on WatchTCM. I know, for me, a lot of films fall through the cracks either because I haven't heard of them or they're just not on my radar. I can't wait to hear what great recommendations everyone adds!

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Laura (1944)
Metropolis (1926)
My Dinner with Andre (1981)

Great thread.

I was honestly thinking about making a similar thread a few hours ago where we could post recommendations for upcoming TCM films.

The Great Race (1964), a fun slapstick comedy about an international car race with Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk, is streaming until June 10th.

http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/movies/7...reat-Race-The/

Also, Night and Fog (1955), a French documentary short film that Truffaut once called "the greatest film ever made." This is the Criterion description:

Quote:
Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust, Night and Fog (Nuit et brouillard) contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps’ quiet, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. With Night and Fog, Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man’s violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again.

I'm sure most everyone has it on blu, but I couldn't pass this one up. TCM just posted Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) for streaming. ESSENTIAL.

I love the currently streaming Moonfleet by Fritz Lang, from the director's ultra-atmospheric, rather Gothic CinemaScope vision of the pirates' seaside world to Stewart Granger's brooding, yet charismatic lead performance as a bit of a Heathcliff-esque character. I know Lang felt ill at ease with CinemaScope, describing it as a format fit only "for snakes and funerals," but this picture is still grimly sumptuous on a visual level. In general, it functions very well as a family-friendly adventure film, but also has definite veins of more profound melancholy and menace. A neglected gem in the Lang canon. So, recommended.

TCM is featuring Rock Hudson as their Star of the Month for June and will be showing 22 of his films throughout the month.

Here's the link to the list of films:
http://www.tcm.com/this-month/articl...s-in-June.html

For those that want to watch All That Heaven Allows before purchasing the Criterion, it'll be airing this Thursday the 12th, at 10 PM.

When that film was announced on Criterion, many forum members also brought up Written on the Wind, another of Douglas Sirk's greatest (or so I hear, I haven't seen the film yet myself). It'll be aired the following morning, Friday the 13th at 8 AM.

The Third Man is a very popular Criterion title. Unfortunately, the Criterion edition is Out of Print. I hope you will enjoy the film. I thought it was just okay, but it is definitely worth watching.

Also, I didn't realize that the film TCM aired at 8 P.M. EST last night is also in the Criterion collection until recently. I imagine that Rene Clair's Sous les toits de Paris (Under the Roofs of Paris) will end up on the Watch TCM app soon.

Thanks for posting this news! I only knew about Warner Archive Instant. I'm going to check it out this weekend.

I watched Sirk's All That Heaven Allows last night and really enjoyed it. The technicolor was so incredibly saturated, which I loved and Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman work beautifully together. I couldn't get over how b***hy and selfish Cary's children were! I was like . haha And that gossipy Mona!

I'll definitely be picking it up on Criterion to see the HD transfer down the line. Tonight is the final night it'll be available on TCM. Here's the link: http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/movies/6...Heaven-Allows/

All times eastern

Thin Man, The (1934)

7:45 AM
Maltese Falcon, The (1941)

9:30 AM
Big Sleep, The (1946)

11:30 AM
Laura (1944)

1:00 PM
Murder, My Sweet (1944)

Kieślowski's Three Colors Trilogy is up and available for viewing until June 30th. I've never seen them, but I know they're classics. Can't wait to dive into Blue with one of my favorites, Juliette Binoche!

Blue (1993)

White (1994)

Red (1994)

Enjoy!

When asked what my favorite film ever is, I vacillate between "Contempt" and "Red" but I usually end up choosing "Contempt."

However, if I could count this trilogy as one film, the decision would be a no-brainer. Kieslowski was a genius, and this is his masterpiece and one of the great works of art in any medium in the 20th century.
