Default Pioneer Elite oh how I love thee (delay comes with a pricecut)

Patience is a virtue they say. I have a Pioneer Elite collection. Mostly "vintage" gear that had the urushi side panels. PD-65 CDP, CLD-97 LD player (Yes and LD player ), DVD player, and a receiver and it would tickle me pink to get the Pioneer Elite BD player completing a nice matching Pioneer Elite front-end for one of my viewing rooms. Ahhh...these are long days in the wait...

The only Elite model I ever had was their original DVD recorder. Didn't seem like I was going to get much use out of it so I sold it on eBay shortly after buying it. Was built very nice though and of course performed beautifully.

As for the Elite BD player, that's the one I've wanted since it was announced. I know I'll get a lot of use out it being that my family loves watching movies! Can't wait!

I've read around more than once this idea that the BR players are all based off of a Pioneer model, whatever that means.

IF that's true...what I'm wondering is: Are all the BR players in the $1000 and up tier basically clones of this BR Elite player without all the networking features and such?

Because if that's the case, then I guess that would clear up any guessing games real quick.

Anyone know?

I read a similar comment from an MS employee so I'd wait for hard facts before considering this any more than FUD.

My guess is that the BD players are different.

I'm thinking that some of the Japanese players may share the same component chassis but I have to think that Samsung and other non Japanese companies are rolling their own.

Just out of curiosity, I was looking at Pioneer's site. According to their web page, their Elite Blu-Ray player only decodes Dolby Digital things. If you look at the picture of the player on their site, it also only has the Dolby logo on it. If you look at the pictures of the player on this site, there's both DTS and Dolby logos on the player.... did they drop the DTS decoding? Because if they did, I will not be purchasing this player. For $1800, it should decode friggen everything in my opinion.

I wonder how much of that $1800 is due to the networking capabilities that I personally couldn't care two rips about...and probably a lot of other people won't care about it, either.

I agree that, for two grand thereabouts, I should be able to buy a player that's as "futureproof" as possible, at least on the video and audio fundamentals.

Now, to Pioneer's credit...they usually tend to take VERY good care of their Elite products and customers.

This player isn't coming out until around September now, right? I hope that's true, because I'd like to see that extra time used to make the player itself have the audio decoders necessary for all the new sound fields and HDMI 1.3 (ready).

Pioneer has repeatedly confirmed an end of June release via email to me.

That early? Hmmm...that's almost bad news. I'd almost rather seem the delay it a few months if it meant meeting the critera I laid out.

Oh well, I guess we'll all find out soon enough.

Is it the Panasonic being released in September, or the Pioneer? A while back I heard a rumor that one of them was being released in September, but I couldn't remember which one, and now I can't find where I read it. Also, I've heard rumors about upgrading HDMI 1.1 to 1.3 is possible with firmware upgrades. Not entirely sure if that would work or not, but it'd be nice if the companies didn't forget about us, the early adopters and the major supporters. As for the Pioneer only decoding Dolby Digital, I can't imagine that being possible. It's a friggen Elite player, you'd think it'd have to decode pretty much both Dolby and DTS!

The Panasonic is indeed currently scheduled for September release.

I kind of hope the Pioneer gets pushed back to match that release date, for the previously mentioned reasons.

These two players, at that kind of price point, really need to cover the full gambit as much as possible, or at least have the back door left open easily enough to where they COULD cover the gambit in the future as need be.

If a few months' delay is what it takes to make that happen...they should do it.

Hell, these players aren't even out yet and you've seen what kind of fodder they've been for HD-DVD fanboys and MS acolytes and so forth on at least one now notorious forum of major prominence.

There will be ZERO mercy and margin of error shown to >$1000 hardware and I guess I can see some logic to that..although you know it will be madness at the hands of the HD-DVD fanboys and other rabble.

I agree that for that kind of money those players oughta be souped-up. Because the Pioneer is not I've changed my mind and will likely buy the Samsung. If it does well great. If it doesn't I'll ebay it when the Sony comes out.

True, but like we've discussed previously, is it really worth spending a lot on a first gen player which will be missing a lot of features. When I bought my first DVD player it didn't have DTS or progressive output. The initial BD players are lacking more than a couple features that I'd like.

Exactly right. I think the PS3 is about as far as I'm going with this thing unless we really get some kind of last minute, very pleasant shock somewhere.

I called Pioneer today and they keep saying end of June... You would think since it is June 5th, they would have announced a delay... so the question seems to be Samsung or Pioneer?

In a way I'm glad to hear that they're stating June on the phone. That's exactly what they've told me over and over via email. At least they're consistent. If we get lucky and there's a nice discount Power Buy on this title somewhere I will likely go back to my original choice for a player. I honestly don't want a Samsung on my rack, it's bad enough there's a Toshiba product there.
