Default Onkyo 605 + Polk 6750's first time setup

Ok, I'll preface this with saying my speakers haven't arrived yet.

That said, I know there are a lot of people on this forum with the same setup as mine for their home theater. What are some suggested settings? What are some things that stumped you and you'd like to pass on? What things should I know?

I'd appreciate the help- some of the 80hz settings and such confuse me. I'll be hooking up my subwoofer via RCA instead of messing with hooking it up to the center/etc. I want to make my setup go as smoothly as possible cuz... the wife is on the warpath about this new setup. I currently am using the TV's AWFUL speakers and she's not pleased. I can't hook up my old HTiB without a big hassle as the sub isn't powered.

Anyway, any help you guys can give is greatly appreciated.

It's fairly self-explainatory..... you'll connect all the speakers to the proper terminals on the back of the AVR, connect the Sub Via LFE, either Left, or Right, doesn't matter..... plug it into your wall (you said it was powered right?) and as far as settings... the Onkyo has some calibration deal, or just connect it all "As is" and please the wife, and do fine-tuning when she's not there (mine gets pissed when I decide to tweek anything in the system while she's around!)

Heh, mine does too. It is a powered sub. Is there any need for a splitter to plug in both left and right on the sub? I've seen those available.

I wasn't sure about the settings as far as the 80hz for the 5 and the settings for the sub. If the auto-calibration does that I'll probably just use it.

I got a Y splitter->one out on the receiver to two outs on the sub. Also get yourself some great speaker wire and a nice pair of wire strippers to make your job EASY!

p.s....these speaker mounts work:

these do not:

I bought the first one for my rears and absolutely love them. I had bought the second ones first as the polk site simply reccoments "omnimount", but don't be fooled. Option #1 is where it's at.

Thanks for all the suggestions Gene. I have some wirestrippers already and a Y-cable is on it's way to me. I especially appreciate the mount suggestions because I was trying to figure out which one would work, though currently I'm thinking of going with stands instead.

cool, you're welcome. I bought those mounts in a circuit city b+m, and they look VERY sharp paired with the speakers. They are very easy to adjust as well. If you have any other questions about this setup feel free to ask or PM me. You are going to have so much fun with your new theater. I haven't gotten to use mine much and think about/look forward to using it more WAAAAY too much because it is just awesome.

I have a quick suggestion. When you get everything connected, don't start listening to music or watching movies while your wife is around until you have set all of the settings correctly. Otherwise she'll be thinking "damn, this sounds awful. What a bad investment."
