Default In your opinion, best setup Onkyo 605+polk

Hello every one. I looking for a little help setting up my my Onkyo tx-sr605 receiver, Polk monitor 60's, Polk cs1 and Mtx sw2 subwoofer. I ran the audyssey setup. The results had the monitor 60's and center cs1 at full band. In your EXPERT opinions, What is the best configuration for these speaker? I don't want to be missing out on anything. I love to read everyones responses, even on equipment I don't have . Everyone is so helpful on this site. Thank you for your time.

Older Onkyos detected anything that went below 80Hz as full range, against the advice of Audyssey, per Chris Kyriakakis over in the AVSforum's Audyssey thread. The newer models use 40Hz as the threshhold instead. On your 605, run Audyssey then set all channels to 80Hz, and LPF of LFE to 120Hz so the full LFE channel is sent to your sub (it defaults to 80Hz and Audyssey does not change this setting).

I also have an Onkyo TX-SR605. I highly recomend taking them off of full band. Try setting the Sub/LFE crossover point @ 80, and then the center and fronts at 80hz, this way the sub can do the low-end bass and the fronts and centers dialogue and mid-bass and take strain away from your amp. I'm pretty sure this is the THX standard.

Just don't set them at full. It's my understanding that you end up having the sub and the fronts competing for some of the low range frequencies and, it's not good. Just try it and see for yourself.

Thank you for your help. I just want to get the most out of my speakers. What's the best or proper way to calibrate the subwoofer? Thanks again for the quick reply.

So I should do 120HZ on my sub(I guess we have the same receiver)-

I trust you know your stuff.

Does is make a difference choosing 120hz or 80hz in regards to the sub?

On your receiver, LPF of LFE will send what ever Hz you select and under to your sub, it will always send the the full 120hz of the .1 channel so your crossover on your sub should be set to full.

I keep my receiver crossover at 80hz but if it sounds better to you you can set it to 120hz which just sends some more high bass to the sub instead of allowing your speakers to take it and leave the lower stuff to the sub.

So I played with the settings and it made a huge difference. After adjusting the settings, do I still run audioseey again.

Honestly, LPF of LFE is going to make a very subtle difference that you probably won't hear with 95% of listening material. The reason is that mixers typically low-pass filter LFE content between 80-100Hz anyway. However, since the LFE channel itself is brick-wall filtered at 120Hz, setting LPF of LFE ensures that all of the LFE channel reaches your sub regardless of what point your other channels are crossed over to the sub. Note: LPF of LFE ONLY AFFECTS THE LFE CHANNEL. You can still set your channel crossovers higher than this without them being filtered (though you shouldn't).

That said, the harmonics are what give deep bass its perceived tone, and there are some movies that depend on those harmonics. A good example is LOTR: Fellowship, when Sauron dies at the beginning. There's a monstrous bass sweep that's partially in the speakers and primarily in the LFE channel, and you can definitely notice a difference between 80 and 120Hz LPF of LFE on that scene. With 80, it comes across more as a deep rumble, but if you pass the whole LFE channel, that rumble has a more defined tone to it.

Again, not a setting to get hung up on, because it won't make a huge difference. But for peace of mind that you're getting the whole LFE channel as the mixer intended, set LPF of LFE to 120Hz. Also, make sure you bypass any crossover/filter on your subwoofer itself so that you aren't cascading that filter with the filters your AVR is applying. If you can't bypass your sub's filter, turn its crossover knob to its highest setting. This also ensures that any crossover-induced delay doesn't throw off your distance/delay settings as determined by Audyssey.

You don't need to re-run Audyssey unless you changed something on your subwoofer itself. Changing the crossover points doesn't affect Audyssey's equalization, as it just turns off any equalization below the new crossover point.

Of course, I'm assuming that you ran Audyssey with the mic on a tripod, right? If not, I strongly recommend getting a cheap tripod and using it to re-run Audyssey with the mic at the level your ears would be, slightly above the back of your seating, and with yourself OUT of the room when it runs. The better data you provide, the better equalization you'll get from Audyssey. Of course, this may not be too crucial, considering the 605 only has Audyssey 2EQ, so it doesn't equalize the subwoofer at all.

After reading all the great advice from every one here, I am very pleased with my receiver and speakers. I recently watched, "The Watchmen" on DVD And "Underworld Rise of the Lycans". All I can say is "Wow". Tweaking my settings made a huge difference.

Now its time to Tweak my T.V. settings. I own a Sony KDS-55A2000 rear projection T.V. Wish me luck. I didn't notice how many settings there are in the setup menu.

You know it's funny, I had moved my TV around and hadn't re-calibrated with Audyssey in a while and I did this and noticed a big difference. Then after I had done that and did some research on different crossover settings, and with our good friend the Rev helping out, I almost feel like I have a new system!

Check these links out. I sit about 7.5 feet from my Tv and the speakers are all set up accordingly(though I'm running 7.1). I really like having the surrounds @ 110 degrees just behind your head a bit. I also raised mine up about a foot.
