Default Onkyo 605 setup trouble

Hey guys,
I just got my Onkyo 605 today but am having trouble getting it up and running. I am trying to do the automatic speaker setup with the mic, but after it does my rear right speaker, it stops and says "retry" without going and doing my rear left. My only other option is to cancel. The manual says I should have a few options on my screen. Which brings me to my other issue:

My receiver menu is not showing up on my screen. I checked to make sure there was an actual receiver menu and not just the tiny bit of text that shows up on the front of the receiver by turning on my PS3, and that does not show up either. I have an HDMI going from my PS3 to an HDMI IN on the receiver, and then an HDMI going from an HDMI OUT to my TV's HDMI IN. I can't figure out what the issue is.

The default setting of the receiver does not output hdmi video. What i did when i got mine was i just hooked up an rca cable from video out of the receiver to my tv. That gave me acess to the on screen menu, i then went into the receivers hdmi settings and turned [HDMI MONITOR ON] it is set to "OFF" by default. After that you can plug your mic and run the audyssey calibration. There are a few times during the setup where it will tell you to hit next and confirm some settings with your remote.

Ok. I just got the on-screen menu up using an S-Video cable but now I guess I'll try to turn the HDMI on. I have been doing the auto speaker detect but it tells me there is an error after it does my rear right. The sound comes out, but it won't move on to my rear left.

*EDIT* HDMI on-screen menu is good now, but for some reason the speaker setup still won't fly. Also, have not seen any sign of my PS3 on screen.

**EDIT** PS3 on screen, speaker setup still trying to molest me.

Ok now that you have your menu working, go into your source menu and tell the receiver what input do you want the ps3 to show up on. I have mine on AUX, you have to tell the receiver what to look for when you switch to a certain input otherwise it might be looking for optical/digital coax and component/composite for video. Go into the source and set it up.

* EDIT: As for the speaker setup if you have a 5.1 speaker setup make sure you didn't accidentally hook up one of your rear speakers to the surround back panel.

The only time I've ever gotten the retry was when there was some noise in the room that messed up the sequence. I know it sounds silly, but is the room quiet the whole time the test is running?

If that's not the problem, make sure all your wires are screwed down tight and aren't touching.

I think this is probably my speaker problem... I thought what I had was surround back and the two speakers that I didn't have went in between them and the front speakers. Evidently that is not correct. Let me trying switching those hookups around...

This is what happened to me while I was connecting my 805 the first time. Check your connections! If audyssey does not detect the speaker it will fail.

Still didn't work. the Onkyo on-screen menu says that the FR speaker was detected, as well as the Center, Front Right, Surround Right, and Surround Back Right (I don't even have one). It says the Surround Back Left is not detected, (which is good because I dont have one plugged in), but it won't move on to test the Surround Left or the Subwoofer.

And I did that too apparently, but I just fixed it and now it is still messed up.

Id really take a good look to be sure the speaker wiring is in the correct place on the receiver.

If it's seeing a surround back right, make sure you don't have the surround left accidentally plugged into the wrong spot (or the power into one and the ground into another). The surround left plugs are above the rights, not next to them.. blue, and blue/gray in color if memory serves

my thinking is that the system isn't matching up a 5.1 or 7.1 system so it's stopping (It would still see one rear surround if 6.1 is being used)

Yeah, double-check your wiring. Make sure your surround are going in to surround left and right, not back left and right. Also make sure you don't have the polarity twisted on the cable- that'd cause it to fail.

What do you mean by have the polarity twisted?

I double checked my wiring into the back of the receiver and there is definitely nothing going into the rear surrounds. I thought maybe that my left surround speaker was busted or something, but I just put on Rambo and it is definitely working. All my speakers are working when I play the movie, but that auto setup still is not.

I mean like have the negative on the speaker hooked up to the positive on the receiver and vice-versa.

... I guess a better question would be to ask what kind of connections your speakers have on the back.

*edit* Though if it's working for movies... bleh. Maybe I'd give Onkyo a call, seeing your issues here and in the other thread.

I think I may have just had extraordinary expectations based on everything I've read. Everything sounds "good" to me, I just don't know what HD Audio is supposed to sound like, so I'm unsure if I'm hearing it. It's been nearly a year since I've heard any standard surround though, so I have nothing to compare this new sound to.

Anyway, yeah I don't know what is going on with the auto-setup so I did e-mail Onkyo. Hopefully I will hear back from them in a reasonable amount of time.

Something else good to try is to have the 605 produce test tones.

Sit in your most preferred position
Close your eyes and adjust the volume on each speaker until they all have the same volume level where you're sitting. (Use the d-pad up/down and left/right for adjustments). not as good as Audyssey, but it'll do until you can figure out what is going on with everything else.

I'll have to do that, thanks for the tip.
