Default Just ordered my Onkyo 605...now a setup question

First I wanted to thank you all for everything I have learned lurking in this forum for the past 2 months...this place is great, and I have already learned a ton!

I just ordered an Onkyo 605 for use in my soon to be setup home theater and want to make sure I have all of the requisite cables when it actually comes time to set everything up. I know I have seen this discussed before but couldn't find it so easily when I searched the forum.

I plan on watching all of my DVDs/BDs in 5.1 using the Onkyo, and will probably watch 25-50% (sports, HBO movies, etc...) of TV programming in 5.1 also...the remaining 50-75% (run of the mill sitcoms, home improvement shows, etc...) I will be listening through the TV speakers. So my question is what is the easiest way to set this up?

I was planning on the following:

HD DirecTV receiver ---> HDMI ---> HDTV (for audio through TV speakers)
HDTV ---> optical audio ---> Onkyo 605 (enables TV shows thru Onkyo)
DVD/BD ---> HDMI ---> Onkyo 605 ----> HDMI ---> HDTV

I did it this way because I thought the following would mean I would have to have the Onkyo receiver "ON" even if I was listening through the TV speakers:

DirecTV ---> HDMI ---> Onkyo ---> HDMI ---> HDTV

Is that right?

Does my plan seem OK and do you think it will work for my watching/listening preferences? Thanks again for you help!

HD

What's wrong with having the Onkyo on all the time? I have similar equipment and I'm running all HDMI from the DTV DVR and BD player to the Onkyo and then HDMI to the display. Let the Onkyo do all the switching for you. I have had no heat issues or any other problems with this setup and there have been times when the thing is powered up for 12 hrs. straight. Hell, the way I look at it, I bought my audio system for a reason, and with all the audio options the 605 gives you, there is no reason to listen to those crappy little TV speakers.

Either way will work, but I like the second way. That's just me, but yes, you are correct.

if it works for you, go for it. nothing wrong with not wanting it on all the time.

Thanks for the replies.

Will there be any degradation of sound quality the way I outlined it? Or will the two be essentially equal?

only quality i would be concerned with is from the receiver and speakers and there shouldnt be any. doubt youll notice any from tv speakers either.

I just bought the 605, but if it was me i'd just run everything thru the receiver
it's gonna sound way better than any tv speakers...

It will sound WAY better, and it has options to change the DSP to Mono or various others, making it less steps and just as quiet when you need it.
