Default is upconverting a threat?

I was discussing the latest upgrade to the ps3 with a coworker who is as enthusiastic about blu-ray as me (i just crest the 50 title mark yesterday). one thing we came to was naturally the upconverting regular dvds. we both agreed it made our dvds look awesome. the problem is, now I feel less inclined to rebuy titles on blu-ray that I already have on dvd. with the exception of some favorite titles as well as new releases I can't see myself buying a lot of the movies I have now that the the ps3 upconverts them as well the new receiver i'm getting. does anyone else feel this way? I feel like a bad blu-ray footsoldier.

I think upconversion is great for our existing titles, but upconversion doesn't bring it to true 1080. BD still looks 100 times better. I can still tell the difference between upconversion and 1080.
Personally, I will continue to buy BD on upcoming new titles. It may affect my DVD/BD conversion purchases slightly, but for big blockbuster titles, I won't hesitate to replace my DVD's.
I don't think it's a "bad BD footsoldier" to consider not wanting to replace your existing collection. Just keep buying BD on stuff you don't already have! Prices will keep going down, down, down the more popular it gets!

my intent from the beginning was to only rebuy favorite titles and then everything new i wanted. so nothing lost with the upconversion but i now have the ability to enjoy a bit more the titles that i can't get yet or am not rebuying (at least not until they're in the $5 bin)

High prices for players and media are much more of a threat.

Before switching to Blu Ray, I had a DVD collection of over 800 titles. There is no way I am going to rebuy all of those on BD. So I for one am very happy with the up-conversion. I already had an Oppo Digital upconverting DVD player, but now the PS3 has that capability, it's even better.

With that said, I am obviously no longer buying DVD discs. I am only buying BD from now on, and if a title isn't out on BD yet, I just wait.

There are however some all time favorite movies that I would definitely rebuy on Blu-Ray. For instance, if the Indiana Jones Trilogy comes out on BD, I'll buy it that same day. (even though i have it on DVD). Same with Blade Runner and Dune.

I also have a substantial collection of standard DVDs - over 600 titles. And, like a lot of people, I don't want to incur the expense of replacing most or all of them with BDs, and will concentrate mainly on new titles that I don't already own on standard DVD. However, UNLIKE a lot of people, I will still continue to purchase standard DVDs in certain cases. One example would be the film "Ace in the Hole", which I've been waiting for on DVD for a very long time. Criterion is putting it out in July, and if I waited until it came out on BD, I would probably be waiting a decade, if not forever. SO, although my standard DVD purchases will be limited, I will still make them.

Unless the transfer and/or masters are suspect...if it's a movie I really care about...going for real HD over even the best of upconverted standard is an easy no-brainer choice for me on movies I care about.

Understood. I guess my statement was partially incorrect. If I know a movie is coming to BD, I will not buy the regular DVD. Even if I have to wait for 3 months. But, movies that I doubt will ever come to BD, I will still buy on DVD.

I.E. I ordered the upcoming Seindfeld Season on DVD since I doubt they would ever come to BD.

Now, for "The Office, Season 3", I will most likely wait for a BD release.

same here. I have 600+ DVD. I plan on replacing the heavy hard hitters with blu-ray (first one was POTC 1). Stuff that takes advanatge of the higher rez like sci-fi and stuff. The usual must-have on blu-ray stuff.

In a couple years I may replace some of the other dvd's once the blu-ray prices drop. IT may take a few years of waiting till we can get bargain basement prices on blu-ray movies but to replace a large DVD collection would cost a fortune.

Just because the PS3 can no upscale DVDs to make them look like they are kinda in HD doesn't change the fact that Blurays still look a million times better. I have had the OPPO for a while now, and while it is true that the movies look good, they look no where near as good as their Bluray counterparts...

Not to mention that the PS3 doesn't endow the DVD's with a loseless audio file, which, having spent the money I have spent on audio equipment justifies rebuying anything that says PCM, TrueHD, or DTS MA on Bluray.

It is no threat to me. Blu-ray fare better than DVD. Keep in mind, do you want 480p (DVD) or 1080p (Blu-ray)?

Default 1.8 Impact

1.8 does work - in terms of DVD upscaling. This will change the strategy I collect movie titles. I will continue purchasing 4-star rated BR titles. For movies rated less 4-star, I either rent or buy less costly DVD versions. This applies to Universal DVD movies also. The upscaled DVD though still not at par with BR, but it is close. For those 3-star rated movies, you probably just want to watch once anyway. I won't purchase them unless there is a super promotion deal.

I know that dvd is a lower resolution and I will continue to buy BDs but seeing how good most of my dvds look on my ps3 I have to seriously think about it now. blu-ray does look better still, but now when I see a title I think to myself ''is this a title that is worth the extra quality?'' mind you I haven't bought a dvd since I got my ps3 but i'm being tempted. with the onkyo receiver i'm getting having upconvertion as well will it give the already upconverted signal from the ps3 a little extra? I had 2 upconverting players before and the ps3 is by far the best.

to my knowledge, PS3 was the only BD player not to offer upconversion...so I don't think too many people will feel this way...

I too have a large collection of dvds and just went blu 2 weeks ago, but I'm doing exactly what you're doing, except I couldn't wait for Pan's Labyrinth. I would definitely buy it again on bluray though, just like I did POTC 1-2

I've already stopped buying standard dvds. I only buy blu-ray. But I only buy new release movies on blu-ray or some of my all time favorites. I also have over 700 dvds and am not going to replace them all.
