I can't imagine this upscale player doing any better than my Blu-ray player already does.
And what are customers going to think when shopping during the holidays and they see a BD player for $199, and an upconvert player for a similar price. Why on earth would they spend nearly the same for a player that only plays DVD's, something they already have, when they can get a BD player that does both? Toshiba is going to fail miserably with this one, and it’s so blatantly obvious. If the way the press reacted to their demonstration doesn't send up a red flag, there’s no hope left for them. |

Toshiba still has to go though panasonic, sony, sharp, hitachi, samsung, lg and just about every known maker of CE. The criteria for any new technology to be adopted in these companies is pretty tough, not to mention the engineers are going to laugh and make fun of the 'super-upscaler' privately before they even show up for the meeting.
My bet is other than direct toshiba affilates, noone will license this technology --- at this point no major CE maker wants to pay even 10c for better DVD playback, they're not making a profit on their existing dvd player lineup, and have moved on to the next format. The world hasn't changed since Toshiba gave up on HD DVD, and it seems that the same HD DVD group in Toshiba hasn't either. Slow news day. |

I really liked the comment from the fake amir:
'I supported HD DVD pushing fud for Microsoft for over a year. My loyal followers will once again hop on the micro train and we will defeat Blu-ray. Deadmeat,You are in charge for now.Push as much SUC fud needed..We will be victories!' ![]() |

so just to clarify this then....HDDVD zealots who spent months spanking their monkeys on the premise that HDDVD have better picture quality than BD are now preparing the baby oil to tell us that SUC is as good as BD, which wasnt as good as HDDVD?

![]() From the tone of the article it is clear the press is against Toshiba. They are going to start losing a lot of media respect, as well as public support if they keep focusing their energies and money on "pay back" business stratagies. Toshiba, you are a day late and a dollar short! However I see a real future for SUC technology. INSIDE BLU-RAY PLAYERS! Last edited by tron3; 06-18-2008 at 12:44 PM. |

Exactly how many retailers are going to want to stock DVD players that SUC after being burned by HD-DVD? What kind of market is there for an overpriced DVD upconverter? Toshiba is going to ruin an already tarnished reputation with the retailers.

So what?
That really should just about everyone's response to Toshiba at this point. They've completely rendered themselves irrelevant. I really don't care if they ever support BD at all. It's their loss. Frankly, who is going to deliberately choose to buy a Toshiba product anyways if they see comparably priced products from Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and the like anyways? Screw 'em. They can rot. The more I think about it, the more I like this idea of Disney and SPE pulling out of DVD entirely and really making these guys sweat and giving BD adoption a nice kick in the ass, to boot. The hell with Toshiba. |

So explain to me this...
A customer is in an electronics store faced with two decisions: a SUC player or a Blu-ray player. A SUC player plays DVDs, while the Blu-ray player plays Blu-rays. I would assume most people in this position have figured out that Blu-ray is HD and that DVD is not. Therefore, to the average person, a SUC player is still just a DVD player. I think the idea of "upconverting" is still poorly understood by most people. Having a totally new product (Blu) that supports HD is very clear that it's superior to regular DVD. I think a lot of people acquire upscaling players to replace their dead regular DVD players, by mere accident. It's not something they fully understand the benefits - it just sounds good so they buy it. But they aren't likely to buy if their existing player works just fine... But the SUC players are likely to be on par with entry Blu-ray prices by the time this tech hits the market (if it ever does). So now Joe average is in the store looking at DVD players and Blu-ray players at the same price. He has an HDTV, so which is he going to go for? The overpriced DVD player or the HD player that plays both his DVDs and Blu-ray? |

![]() Think about it. When Disney went BD exclusive, a few BD supporters scoffed saying "Big deal, it's only Disney. We need Warner!". I pointed out that the world is filled with families. Families buy Disney. Heck, even single people buy Disney. EVERYONE buys Disney. Everyone quickly agreed and saw the light. So yes, Disney dropping DVD would certainly be a kick in Toshiba's chops and start the Dominoe effect. But I don't see them doing that until BD players hit the retail sweet spot where everyone starts buying them. I'm hoping by the end of 2010. Last edited by tron3; 06-18-2008 at 02:06 PM. |
