Default Ok if i needed new region free player in uk

Can anyone link me to a good one to buy?

I dunno why my last player suddenly stopped being region free. I have a substantial american collection thats more or less useless now.

I need one thats not gonna go wonky on me again or suddenly stop playing american region blus.

There are two types of multi-region players:
  • Firmware-based multi-region functionality
  • Hardware-based multi-region functionality

Did you do a firmware update recently? If so, that will disable firmware-based functionality.

You need hardware-based functionality as normal firmware updates will not disable this type of functionality.

For example, machines that have ICOS multi-region modifications from Multi-region Magic, meet this criteria.

I don't know what your budget is but an Oppo 103 or Oppo 103D combined with a region free mod make excellent region free players. The mods are very easy to install and, to date, have not been affected by Oppo firmware updates.

I believe http://www.220-electronics.com/ will ship internationally. The Oppos will work overseas, and there is a comparison chart showing which other models are compatible or optionally compatible.

Please note thread title and let's keep it on topic to EU vendors.

I'm assuming posters from America have never encountered H.M. Customs and international despatch charges. Those charges are usually outrageously expensive and I assume Thread OP would rather not deal with that rubbish.

OK. Here's links to what you're asking for.

The full (BD/DVD) ICOS multi-region modification of the Pioneer BDP-450:
http://www.mrmdvd.com/catalog/index....a&filter_id=12

My plans are for the ICOS Sony BDP-S7200 at year's end.

This seems interesting but how would you update the mod with protection from firmware?

I don't understand your question, but if you're asking if you will be able to update firmware with new Sony firmware normally via file download or network, the answer is yes.

ICOS hardware-based modifications are a completely separate module from firmware module and there's nothing to update with ICOS module.

You can also verify this by contacting Multi-Region Magic, if you like.

Yes, multi-region functionality cannot be disabled by routine Sony firmware updates.

Please note the following on the BDP-S1200 product page:
http://www.mrmdvd.com/catalog/produc...oducts_id=1605

" Fitted with a ICOS modification to enable Multiregion Blu-Ray & DVD playback
(Blu-ray Region's A,B,C & DVD Region's 1-6)

Unlike some modified players from other supplier's this Blu-ray player is updated to the latest firmware version and is upgradeable with future firmware updates.
This is a UK model with UK specification and comes with a 1 year warranty

Blu-ray regions are simply selected by using the players remote control. DVD region selection is automatic

Either should be fine as that decision would have to be made by you.

I would download the user manual for each and visit your local shop for comparison purposes to see which one appeals to you.

Then order that one from Multi Region Magic.

I'm tempted to get a Sony Blu-Ray player modified from Multiregion Magic. Can anyone recommend them? From having a quick browse, they appear to be a good company. It works out cheaper to buy the player I want and send it to them to modify, instead of getting it direct from them. But will this be covered by any kind of warranty or are you screwed if the player breaks 2 months later?

Their T&Cs say they offer a 1-year warranty on all new products (similar to the base warranty at 220, WI & Bombay here in the States), so it might be safer to buy a pre-modded player from them directly. Since hardware mods essentially void the factory warranty, it's important that the seller stand behind any issues that come up with the player for at least the first year; that may be why the big U.S. modders don't offer after-the-fact mods like MRM. Still, MRM is the only UK hardware modder I've heard of with a decent reputation, which automatically gives them a leg up for Brits over 220/WI/Bombay (no international shipping charges, no HMRC duties, VAT built into the price).

Might be a dumb question but looking on this website seems to be the cheapest option for region free players. Question though, so if I just never allow my player to access the internet, I have no risk of losing the region free coding, right?

if you mean MRM then yes you have no problems of losing the region free capabilities if connected to the internet.

the region free capability is made possible via a chip (ICOS modification) which is installed on the players main board, this governs the regions so even if you update the firmware or the player is connected to the internet it wont do anything to remove the region free capability.
they also provide region free firmware updates for all the players on their website should you need to update.

i just purchased a Sony BDP-S5500 to add to my other 2 BD players and apart from the basic aesthetics** Overall i am impressed...still cant believe how small these are lol

**last year sony were building a lot of models made from mostly metal, this year it would seem its entirely plastic like a lot of samsung players.
