Cool Onkyo has some great news for HTIB

they are hinting at a new HTIB.
they hinting it will have the 705 newest speakers in their series and a bluray player to support it all in audio and video departments its just a rumor but that would be great for a beginner or a large bedroom. waaking my wife up easy hahaha tho i would be dead

The less HTIB systems out there..... the better. If people were forced to piece together systems, they might look at two speakers, and say "well...these are both $40.... but what's the difference?"

And once someone is forced to listen, they'll quickly learn sound is subjective, and price isn't directly proportionate to enjoyability.

In all fairness though, Onkyo have been pretty good at setting the bar where HTiB is concerned. They had the first THX certified HTiB.

They're not my cup of tea though.

Does being THX certified even mean anything???? To me it just seems to be a marketing ploy..

I think there are only a few speaker models that are dubbed thx certified correct? So if just the receiver is and not the speakers, what do you gain really?

Snake oil to me..

It's pretty much a guarantee that the speakers met some board's "standards" you pay for the right to be tested, and approved by THX....

that being said, there can be equipment etc. that blows away these, but never did the certification.... so to me, it really doesn't mean much... besides, I listen to things before I buy them, and don't use spec sheets and fancy labels as my guide.

Onkyo's recent crop of HTiBs aren't traditional HTiBs. They are essentially component systems that are shipped in one box. You can buy the included speaker packages and receivers separately from Onkyo.

And as far as HTiBs are concerned, no other brand even approaches the quality of the Onkyos.

I think Onkyo is leading the way to the future of HTIB systems...Seperate components! More consumers should be referred here for HT advice. The only problem then would be controlling the fourms.

I agree that there are two types of "HTIB's" one being receiver/speakers, other being DVD/CD/Amp combo "thing" with speakers, and subwoofer (type of thing) that powers speakers sometimes too.

Home Theater in a Box--a single-purchase solution as opposed to building your system out of "separates", like picking your own fronts, sub, center, surrounds, and buying a separate receiver, or even pre/pro and amp

Hmm... what do you want? I'm not an HT advisor. Let crackinhedz deal with this stuff because I'm no expert on under any circumstance.

You may gain a lot in terms of power handling, processing, etc, or at least know that your receiver isn't going to hit 30% of its output at loud volumes.

There's a reason why the Denon 5308CI has Ultra2 certification, because it passes all the tests.

Compare the Onkyo TX-SR875 (Ultra2) power handling to the Denon 4308CI (no THX) and you'll see the difference in all channels driven.

It certainly doesn't mean that products without THX aren't good, because the 4308CI is arguably the better audiophile receiver of the two, but if you know what specifically you're looking for in terms of performance it is not just snake oil and it certainly doesn't just bump up the price as the top-end Onkyo receivers show.

The Panasonic -800U series are THX certified plasma panels but the certification certainly doesn't become invalid based on your speakers.

Agreed. I've had 2 different HTiB and absolutely love the idea...if they have separate components. Onkyo was my last and I just upgraded the receiver. Onkyo is da bomb for an apartment my size.

That's actually what I originally posted, but I edited it right after it went up to extend the explanation. Figured maybe the real noobs could benefit from the clarification.

My point was not that it becomes invalid because of my speakers. Going to movie theaters that are THX certified compared to those that aren't doesn't show much of a difference... I would believe that in a movie theater is where serious money to sound is spent... But if you want to think it matters than I guess it does..
