Default 1st time SUB set up option & LFE db levels through receiver

Any input appreciated.

12" Sub has been successfully zapped and added via the Audyssey mic to an Onkyo receiver.

On the Sub itself, there is a switch setting for Pro Logic or Dobly Digital 5.1/7.1. If I go with the Pro Logic option, I believe the receiver totally runs it. If I go with the other option, I have to manually tweak the settings all the time. Maybe this is an obvious dumb question, but what would you choose and why??

On the Sub itself, I have a good idea of the cross over frequency and volume controls of where I want it to be, but noticed something in the online screen audio setup menu for the Onkyo receiver and the instruction manual really does not address very well. There is a dedicated LFE menu section with a grocery like list of each audio codec type [Dolby HD, DTS HD, etc.] and each with its own db rating. Currently the values are all zero. Looks like they go in increments of 10 db. The lowest rating I can choose is -20. What would say to do with this section -- do I want this number low or high??

Thanks

1frs what is you're receiver model?

Audyssey imply that you put you're sub in 120hz mode (the Cutout Knob to the max) and if you have a Bypass Switch use it. You should too put you're SUB volume at mid level. Those are the requirement for Audyssey

Second check the SPEAKER SIZE and FREQUENCY that Audyssey for you're speaker. If you have a sub is a good idea to but ALL the speakers to SMALL and use a Crossover of 80hz over all the speakers. Those 2 settings don't mess with the Audyssey EQ. Setting all speakers to Small will ouput all the bass under 80hz to you're sub.

While setting up my 10" sub for my 805 these were my settings as per the 805 manual. On the sub adjust the gain all the way up and set the crossover frequency at 120hz. This will allow for Audyssey to pickup the sub in the autocalibration. If the gain is low then audiyssey will have a hard time picking it up. As for you switch setting I would go with DD 5.1/7.1 for the first calibration. You could try both and see what you like best. After the Audissey calibration you can go back and "tweak" the db levels to your satisfaction. I believe my current setting for the sub is at -4.5.

OK cool - well its the 705 model. I am almost 99.9% certain I had turned to 120hz when I did the Audyssey. I actually have it on the bypass mode (Digital 5.1/7.1 switch) now. And I will double check that all the speakers are set to small, but I think they are.

So if I do go with the bypass mode as you suggest, that kind of makes my other question moot then --- meaning what do I do with that grocery list of codec types in the Onkyo audio menu setup that allows me to customize dB levels.

Thanks for the input. So it sounds like going in bypass mode means we do not have to deal with the grocery list then in the audio menu for codec types and their respective db levels.

Have you by chance messed around with Listening Modes at all?? Out of the box and after the Audyssey setup, I was absolutely blown away when running some scenes from SwordFish. The sub was thumping and the speakers were screaming. It was great. But then I started messing with the Listening Mode [Mono, Stereo, etc.] buttons, which by the way I would definitely not use most of them for movie watching. But actually for many of them, my sub and surrounds basically disappeared and everything was going through the fronts and center. I just ended up calling it a night, but hopefully when I go and turn it on later today, it will play & sound like it did initially The Pure Audio mode sounded the best obviously, but I think at that point of me switching back and forth even on this mode, sub and surrounds were no where to be found.

I primarily use Multichannel PCM 5.1 and allow my PS3 to decode the Codecs and send to the receiver (via HDMI Linear PCM). the only listening modes I have played with are the DD DTS and THX when I am playing games as some games today have these formats. You definetely want to be in Multichannel because Pure Audio depending on the input could be 2ch stereo.

Well leave all the option to 0 is my guess.

The Audyssey level is at Reference, it calibrate all speakers so that they sound close to each other. It's also EQing the room as much as it can. My Denon 3808 have a Audyssey EQ result under Setup Check, it shows frequency response for each speakers and a counter EQ is applied to that to make them sound as close as possible to eachother.

It's doing a veyr good job here and the bass is awesome from my old crappy sub..

I think I am starting to like the bypass option even more, cause there are going to be certain movies where you want to jack up the bass and certain ones where you want to tone it down.
