I am new to the world of lossless audio and have a question about my new onkyo 606 with my ps3. I have had my ps3 since launch and have been watching blu rays ever since. I was ignorant to the potential for audio on blu ray until the middle of last year, then I started hearing about lossless audio and how great it was. I decided that I wanted to find out for myself but decided to wait upgrading my receiver, since I heard that the ps3 couldn't decode the DTS-HD MA and thought it likely that sony would fix that through an update. Of course they did, and so as soon as I could afford the onkyo 606 I got it and I recently hooked it up. My question is when I push display while watching a blu ray on my ps3 it will show the audio being used, and when my ps3 shows Dolby True HD or DTS-HD MA my receiver shows it is PCM. In fact that is all my receiver will ever show while listening to anything. PCM. Is this a malfunction of my receiver because it has not once shown that Dolby True HD or DTS-HD MA was playing, just pcm. Or is this a setup problem. I do not know much about these things and I am sorry if this has been discussed before, but if this is something that is normal due to the capabilities of the ps3 or onkyo 606 will someone please let me know why, because as far as I have heard they are both capable of decoding DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD. I would greatly appreciate some clarification. I would just like to know if it is a setup problem or if I am really hearing the right sound.

Yes, you are hearing the lossless audio from the blu-ray. The reason the 606 only shows pcm when watching a bd is because the ps3 is decoding the lossless audio of either dolby true-hd or dts-ma and sending it to receiver as linear pcm. The 606 identifies it as pcm decoded audio and simply amplifies it, thus only showing the pcm icon on 606. The only time you would see dts-ma or dolby true-hd on the receiver is if you had a player capable of bitstreaming the lossless audio and having the receiver do the decoding. Bitstreaming just means that the player simply sends the audio track to the receiver untouched, without processing it or decoding it. Hardcore audiophiles will argue that it is better to have the receiver decode the audio but there is no audible difference whether the player does the decoding vs. the receiver. Hope this clears things up for you.

I was wondering with your PS3 and onkyo 606 set up, what icons on your 606 is lit up when you are playing a blu ray movie with trueHD or Master Audio content? To my understanding from reading the 606 manual two icons should light up. 1. the 'PCM' icon as you have mentioned. (page 9 item 3 of the 606 manual) 2. the 'HDMI' icon. (assuming you are using HDMI cable between your PS3 and 606. page 9 item 6 of the 606 manual. But from reading a bunch of posts on various forums, it seems that the icon 'Multi Ch' (page 9 item 6 of the 606 manual) should light up instead of HDMI icon. Can you please verify for me? (I am waiting for my 606 to arrive, and I already have a PS3) Thanks, Henry |

You can set the PS3 to send bitstream while watching a movie, just hit triangle button and choose "AV-settings" and change "Linear PCM" to "Bitstream" - Viola! After doing that my reciever now shows "Dolby Digital" / Etc instead of just "PCM" and "Multichannel" like it did before (I have the Onkyo 605). The "HDMI" on the display only indicates that the signal is coming via HDMI. |

Your receiver may say dolby digital, but that is not a good thing, as DD is lossy codec. Meaning your not hearing the audio you want to be hearing. There is a sticky here somewhere's that explains all of this... |
