Checked the scenes in question last night and, yes, the compression artifacts are there (on a 47-inch screen). Are they enough to ruin the full presentation of the film? Not really. However, given that this is a limited edition premium collectible edition of the film at a premium price, I would expect a bit more quality control here. I understand that not all the masters Twilight Time gets are the best, but in this case the artifacting is due to poor encoding of the listed shots.

Haven't watched the new version myself yet, but based on all the comparison screenshots going around--I definitely prefer the look of the older release. Sad that Twilight Time didn't get this one right; guess it will go in the junk pile (along with NOTLD'90 and TT's release of The Fury).

For all the owners of the new release that are so unhappy about it and prefer the older one, I have a solution...
![]() Sell me your slightly used copy. ![]() I will gladly pay the $30 you forked over for the release and rid you of that terrible item. ![]() |

I guess ignorance can be bliss at times. I have no idea what to look for when it comes to "compression issues". Someone mentioned seeing it on their 47" TV, mine is 46" and I thought the movie looked great.
I know we should all be demanding the best transfers these companies can give and I don't like "settling" but I think I reached the point where I truly don't care to train my eyes to see certain things like edge enhancement. I hear Batman Begins is one of the worst offenders for EE yet I don't really see it while the movie is playing. Even when I pause it and strain my eyes I still don't quite see those outlines. |

The difference is due to encoding and brightness levels being adjusted. Not noise reduction. They both come from the same master. (So it's been stated by TT.)

Well TT stated it was the same 4K master as before. Either a Brightness adjustment (Or a Gamma shift) during the encoding process is my best guess unless Sony re-tweeked the master before re-providing it to TT. Thinking Taxi Driver Master in 4K.

It's not a comparison! If the movie looked good enough in the theater (without any complaints about the video), then it's good enough when you see it at home on blu-ray.

What do you mean by marginally superior and what size tv are you using? Also, how close do you sit to notice a difference between both releases?

Which one is it? "Do people gripe about the video quality, whenever they go and see a movie at the theater, and complain about it to the manager, after they've paid their money? If not, then why do it at home....This compression issue is very easy to be resolve! Either they keep the blu-ray, or resell it, if they don't want it. I'm quite sure they won't have any problems getting rid of it. Somebody will gladly take Fright Night off of their hands, with or without the alleged compression issues. It's impossible to please everybody.. A one man's junk, is another man's treasure!" |

I have both the original TT release and the new 30th Anniversary version.
Is there any reason for me to get one of the Sony releases from around the world (better PQ / AQ, more extras, etc. ?) Also, are all the international Sony releases identical? Thanks in advance. |
