Nor do I. It's still a beautiful presentation. That said, the new transfer is marginally superior. And while I haven't delved into the extras yet, I'm looking forward to doing so.

Kinda disappointed a bit with Battle of the Five Armies, hoping that the eventual extended edition adds more to the story like the extended version of The Desolation of Smaug did.
It's been almost 20 years since I've seen Fright Night from start to finish, I honestly had forgotten nearly everything that happened during the nightclub scene. And while I don't have the original release to compare the 30th anniversary edition to, the new release looks amazing, soft in places and you can tell in spots where lesser quality film stock was used. But overall I can't say how pleased I am to have this title in my collection (finally), and despite nearly pulling the trigger several times buying the original release for well over the initial asking price. Glad I waited to see if their was going to be a re-release. On tomorrow's agenda, watching The Purple Rose of Cairo, another film I haven't seen for 20+ years... and remember very little about it, other then liking the film at the time. |

I watched the new BD of this and was quite annoyed to find a few scenes with distracting compression problems. I watched this projected on a 106 inch screen and found the following scenes stood out,
Chapter 6 - 23.17 the side pan on Sarandon's legs sitting in the chair. 26.13 Charlie coming down the stairs Chapter 10 - 43.26 the side pan on the clocks up to the point Sarandon takes the phone. Chapter 13 - Evil Ed walking in the fog. I checked all the same scenes in the original Twilight Time release and the compression is rock solid without the artifacts in those scenes on the new release. I doubt this would be much of an issue for those watching on smaller screens, but the compression in these scenes on the new disc I found very annoying. If anyone else here owns both releases and watches on a 100+ inch screen compare them with the scenes I mentioned and report back to me. I was planning to ditch the original Twilight release, but no chance of that now. |

Glad I held on to the original release as well. I knew something like this was most likely going to happen. Glad to have the new version as well for the extras, of course, but strange how the film gets a higher bitrate, but the compression is worse.
A quick look on Amazon, and you can buy the 30th Anniversary Edition new for $85 and there are no used ones. The lowest price for the earlier release is $130 and that's for a used copy, new starts at $190. I wonder if everyone will still be selling off their earlier version now, or hold on to it instead, and it will be interesting to monitor the prices on these two releases. |

As I stated before, I have the 1st release, the Australian release, and the 30th anniversary release. If however I wasn't lucky enough to buy either of the TT releases upon release, there's no way I'd spend that kind of money for it. The import is definitely more than adequate and definitely a deal. |

I had mine listed and pulled it once I saw the post about the compression issues.

I think the bitrate on the original release is fine. It has a highly variable bitrate which means that the average bitrate will be lower. The peaks are where they need to be and less bits are wasted. As long as a sufficient bitrate is allocated to a specific scene, then throwing more bits at it won't make it look any better.
The compression issue is probably due to the encoding, not the bitrate. The newer release looks slightly more defined in some scenes (especially the darker ones), simply because it's brighter and brings out more grain and shadow detail. It doesn't have anything to do with having a higher bitrate. |

I'd bet you might have better luck with Twilight Time directly. I'll be surprised if SAE have any extras set aside for replacements. |

Although, I think the issue during the pan across the clocks would've been noticed, but I probably would've blamed the motion enhancer on my projector. It's nothing I would've considered "defective", for sure. I'm not saying it's at all a huge deal. If one is going to call the PQ on one version "better" than the other, then the original release may possibly be slightly better. I'm not sure if the other reported visual improvements in the newer release (I think someone reported something being better) offset any of these discovered artifacts. |
