I blame this Brian De Palma guy.

Quote:
"The version of the film included here is director Brian De Palma's original and preferred unrated cut. Supervised by De Palma, this new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution on a Scanity film scanner from the 35mm original camera negative; a 35mm interpositive was also used for additional footage for this cut. Benjamin Sutor at Sony Colorworks in Culver City, California, supervised the conform of unrated content to the original R-rated theatrical version to correctly assemble this master. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, and warps were manually removed using MTI's DRS, while Digital Vision's Phoenix was used for small dirt, grain, noise management, jitter, and flicker.

The original monaural soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from the 35mm magnetic tracks. Clicks, thumps, hiss, hum, and crackle were manually removed using Pro Tools HD, AudioCube's integrated workstation, and iZotope RX 4.

Transfer supervisor: Brian De Palma.
Colorist: Lee Kline/Criterion, New York."

How anyone could not be bothered by the stretching is beyond me but hey, it's your hobby I guess. A lot of folk just like Criterion spine numbers.

NOTE:

Hey guys,

Criterion are aware of the issue. As usual, when there is enough helpful information, there will be a response.

The information will be made available here.

In the meantime, could we please drop the overreactions and move on? Thanks.

I also found a couple more circles to measure on the Arrow release (the tires on the taxi Bobbi gets into and the window on the train), and they are nearly perfectly circular.

Wish an option for Criterion would be to release Dressed to Kill as a 2 Disc. the "New" transfer on one disc and they could give a 4K scan with untouched color etc on a second disc and let the buyer decide what version to watch. Of Course you could just pop in the MGM or Arrow disc but damn it I want that Filmways logo INTRO!

I guess we will wait to see what Criterion does with the release.

It's funny, but when this was first announced I assumed I wasn't the only one rolling my eyes. I thought there were many people, besides myself, questioning the need for this release in the first place because the MGM and Arrow already had transfers that appeared fine, natural, and not in need of futzing with- as well as both releases containing copious extra content.

Now everyone is acting like the Criterion was indispensable to begin with.
Just find that aspect amusing.

Finally sat down and watched my MGM disc for the first time last night. The geometry and framing always looked appropriate and correct which, in some cases at least, it isn't on the Criterion.
As far as the color timing/grading differences- I'm not so certain the look on the Criterion would be off putting or seeming as anachronistic or revisionist if watching it start to finish. I never saw this theatrically so I can't say for certain the MGM/Arrow look is 100% correct. What I see with the Criterion caps is something far from the changes made to Thief, and yet when I actually sat down to watch that disc, my impression of the image was quite different from looking at the isolated caps on my monitor. Those looked revisionist and anachronistic. In motion slightly, but not so much.

The thing is, while the diffused dreamy quality of DePalma's films of this era can be glimpsed in the MGM disc, I found it somewhat at odds with the more 'natural' aspects of color and gamma of the image. It seemed to me like those aspects likely would have been tweaked a bit. That's why I would be very curious to see the Criterion after all. I think, based on previous experience with other discs, that this might look the most right on.

But I won't be able to bring myself to buy unless they fix the geometry.
That's an absolute deal killer right there.

I should have wrote a bit more, but I guess I meant it could look a bit more natural in terms of the tinting and washed out look. perhaps the wash out look in some shots is hot the negative looks compared to the other transfers. but perhaps Criterion will come up with an option. I have a feeling it will either be take it as it is or buy the old version. We'll see.

My Dressed to Kill (MGM Blu-ray copy) should arrive tomorrow at my house in case runs OOP soon. Will see what criterion does in the future with their release.

I sent an e-mail. Hopefully they will do something about this. And to those who think there isn't a problem pupils are not oval.

Well, I'm not going to argue that point because of the preponderance of evidence. However, on the greater issue of this Criterion release, it doesn't require insanity to see the problem, just a bit of common sense.

They deliberately did this just to make me angry and miserable on purpose. **** Criterion. They are sinking their reputation to the ground with this slapdash example of pure corporate greed. I wanted to own this disc and now I never will, there will be a gap in my life, being forced to buy the MGM disc because this is the ABSOLUTELY WORST THING THEY HAVE DONE TO ME!!!

THEY WILL NEVER FIX THIS, PERIOD.

Everything will be all right. Criterion fixed an error on Eraserhead a few months ago, so it's always possible that they might do the same for this Dressed to Kill Blu-ray if it turns out that a technical error is the problem. Let's wait and see what information surfaces in the next few weeks.
