This is my favorite Star Trek film and even tho I own the SWEET Steelbook I'll double dip easily for the Directors Edition Extended Cut in a heart beat... add in the fact it's remastered 4K... is the cherry on top. I might just take this new disc and put it in my Steelbook and huck the other one.

I own the current blu-ray of Wrath of Khan and almost regret buying it. The color timing is poor throughout and has a strong blue tint. When I do watch this now my preferred version is an HDTV cap because the color timing is far more natural. I saw the film when it was released, and though it was a long time ago and I don't claim to have a photographic memory, I can say that the film was never blue before it hit blu-ray.
The only thing I watch on the blu-ray is the extras. You would think it would be a no-brainer to release a decent re-mastered version of this film with the proper color timing. There's tons of fans out there for this film - you don't even have to be a Star Trek fan to like this one - it works as a stand-alone film. There are fanedits out there that take the theatrical edition and combine it with the TV broadcast version for the alternate/additional scenes. For instance, there are two versions of the scene in the elevator early on with Kirk and Saavik. And the theatrical version drops some nice scenes that I'm always happy to see on the extended/TV cut. These are the things that would make me re-buy the blu-ray. |

This is a chance for them to at least get one Trek movie, arguably the most popular one, done right, for good.
If you prefer the Theatrical version and the current color--you are already set with a good restored version in 4K. If you prefer the Director's Cut, OR color more like the previous home video version, OR even if you prefer the Theatrical cut but prefer the previous color---then perhaps this version will be the version you have been waiting for. If they manage to throw in some solid bonus material, such as deleted scenes, more trailers and TV spots (if any exist) or commentary by someone who really knows the movie backwards and forwards--then it will really be worthwhile. Having both versions on one disc (or in the same package) is something that is long overdue. It could pave the way for restorations of the rest of the original cast movies. Star Trek VI (in all 3 versions) would be a relatively easy release and especially with Nick Meyers back wearing his Star Trek hat--- perhaps he could be persuaded to oversee the restoration and color of that one as well. Good sales on those two might pave the way for what a lot of us are praying for..... TMP in all 3 versions, restored and with the DC FX upgraded to HD. A boycott doesn't get us any closer to getting us what we want, I don't think. Last edited by Bolty; 03-22-2016 at 09:37 PM. |

TWOK would be one of the few movies that would be a no-brainer for me to eventually upgrade to UHD. But with 4K projectors still going for 8K, it will be awhile. Will probably buy the 4K BD as a stopgap around XMAS deals. TAS coming to BD is great news, always loved that show. Still want Voyager and DS-9 on BD. Just finishing up season 1 on TNG tonight, I got a deal on UK Amazon for the Full Journey.

![]() Don't you know already? ALL films of every era were filmed with a teal or yellow tint all over the image! And now of course we're getting these "original" versions! Last edited by filmmusic; 03-31-2016 at 06:45 PM. |

It wont...physical media is going bye bye. I bet that you wont even see 25% of the BD's released in 4k. Heck we cant even 1000's of films on DVD in HD still

Not completely. There are three markets for home video: renters, casual purchasers, and collectors. "The cloud" can only satisfy two of those.
There may be less titles available on physical media, but there will always be a market for it and always be those companies who choose to satisfy that audience. |

I have the box set of the original films. Does that contain the extended version of Star Trek II? How much is added in the extended version? Is it much better longer?
I don't have a 4K tv and have no plans on getting any until they get better and the price drops on great Samsung 4k's. More than $1,000 and I'll wait. I like my 46 inch Samsung 1080p a lot and it's five years old. I can't see just swapping tv's at current prices. Anyway, would I still benefit buying the 4K version? Also, would a 4K Blu ray player that up converts provide a better picture of a standard Blu Ray on a standard 1080p tv than using a regular Bl ray player? |

There are other welcome scene extensions, too. The problem is that some inferior takes are utilised, with the dolly-shot around the scientists at Regula I, where new dialogue comes at the cost of self-conscious, read-through style performances. I generally prefer the Director's Cut, but there is an ideal version waiting to be pasted together. OK, it's replacing the ropey Regula 1 piece mentioned above. I have seen the longer version in HD on Sky Movies UK, and it looked pretty seamless, even though the new material might well have been upscaled. |
