For me, animation (of creatures) is about motion and emotion. I'll include in "animation" things that probably aren't animation but here's my list - CGI, cel animation, puppetry, animatronics, motion capture, stop motion, etc.

Does the thing move and emote in a naturalistic way, or at least in a way we can imagine and alien or anthropomorphic rabbit can? The dinosaurs in Jurassic Park certainly move excellently, definitely more than in most modern CGI-fest superhero movies where often the people move strangely and appear to have no weight to them.

Motion and emotion are why, to me, characters like ET, Bugs Bunny, Yoda, and Gollum are so fantastic.

I think both sides of this argument are correct in that while the CG in this movie is dated, it's a lot better than what current home video transfers are showing.

Its incredible by 1993 standards but its undeniable that things have improved dramatically today
They have. That doesn't mean that any given VFX-related stuff produced nowadays is necessarily better than excellent effects work in an older movie.

JW simply does not have more convincing CGI dinosaurs than the 1993 movie. I re-watched both last year. There is no doubt in my mind which one has better computer-generated imagery.

It helps that there's only a few minutes of actual CG beasties in the entire film though. JP's CG works so well because it had to intercut seamlessly with a myriad of practical creatures and ILM knew it. That blend of practical and digital has long since been traded in for an overwhelming slant towards towards digital VFX.

J.A. Bayona has said Fallen Kingdom will use more practical effects which I'm excited for. And even if he uses CG, his use of CGI in A Monster Calls was magnificent. The Monster felt more real and alive than 90% of pure CGI characters in most movies.

Let the CGI and practical effects compliment each other.
There still isn't a proper adaptation of Jurassic Park or The Lost World (Crichton) yet. Both Blu-ray discs are naff because older scan, DNR/EE, washed out colors. At least the audio and bonus features are fine.

Jurassic Park always reminds me of a Ray Harryhausen movie. He brought flesh and blood as well as spirit to his creations and Spielberg (successfully) really tried to bring that same natural look as well as character to his cgi/practical dinosaurs. There were a few cool homage scenes to Ray's work that I thought were awesome. I know Spielberg, Tippet, Winston, et al were big fans and it showed. It truly made Jurassic Park that much better.

I hope that the 4K version of Jurassic World will tone down the blue tint.

And The Big Lebowski. When BTTF is released again at some point it better have the DNR removed!

I wouldn't bet on any Kevin Smith movie ever getting a 4K release.

Oh, yeah. Jurassic Park screams Ray Harryhausen with a budget. The stop motion of Harryhausen is jumpy, but the best still has the underlying motion down. The multiple skeleton sequence in Jason and the Argonauts is still genius.

I realize my dislike of much modern CGI makes me old-fashioned but at least I pretend I have valid reasons.

To this very day Jurassic Park still have the most realistic CG of all time. Watch it on 35mm and you’ll see, nothing dated in it.. more like a window on the future actually.

Resolution could be a problem in 4K, but these animals in a proper faithful 35mm Master (aka NOT from Universal) will always look real.

The color grading looks wonderful, so fresh and modern, but not so clean and artificial like on Jurassic World.

Better than the colors of the 3D master.
I hope Universal restore this color grading for UHD and a remastered Blu-ray.

Do you know how close the HD Master from The Lost World is, depends on color grading? It looks to me, that Kaminski overlook the master and that is based on a newer scan than JP1 and JP3.

Edit——-

Just found these on ebay, go check them out.

It looks like something between the outdated Full HD transfer and the 3D transfer. How close is the 3D transfer to the original color timing?

You weren't asking me but yes, JP2 looks lovely and fresh compared to the other two movies IMO. The sharpness of it doesn't astound and amaze so a lot of people just glanced at it and went "it's shit" but Kaminski just doesn't 'do' sharp a lot of the time, he loves his star filters and other means of diffusing the image.

It's so frustrating that the transfers of 1 & 3 didn't turn out as good as TLW's.

That transfer still holds up really well.
