Flamethrower effect looks great to me, don't see why it needs to look like other flamethrowers and obscure your view. As there's an arc to the stream it should be more fun to use than a big straight puff of flame.

The military flamethrowers are supposed to shoot out a stream of flaming fluid, which has a long lasting effect on the environment and enemies

The amateur ones just shoot out fire, not very long lasting and devastating.
This idea isn't new in gaming. I remember similar flamethrower from back in the Aliens vs Predator PC games.
