I think the reason Star Wars isn't doing too well in China is because the films are still riding off the Original Trilogy. The OT wasn't released in China until a few years ago and it was not received well at all (mostly due to Chinese audiences taking it at face value and criticising the special effects, not accounting for the fact that the movies were 40 years old).
A new trilogy set in a completely new time period with all new characters and very little references to other movies could do well in China, as it'd function as a clean slate for the franchise. |
