Benioff and Weiss, as well as Rian Johnson, could probably produce good series, as long as they are using their own characters and story arcs (and Johnson needs to avoid wild goose chases). The prime complaints against them have been that they made fundamental changes in established characters.
Having Han, Luke and Leia in the new trilogy helped attract attention and sold a lot of tickets, but has hampered the storytelling. Leia and Han were only present for nostalgic reasons, and Luke's re-imaging has been the topic of endless debate. The story line of the current trilogy would have been better if the original heroes were treated as legend in the new series. I hope the new trilogy is not weighed down by Kylo and Rey baggage. |
