Definitely like movies from both, but I'll vote DCEU, because at this point there are movies I'm not interested in seeing from MCU. They've screwed up Spider-Man more than DCEU has messed up any character, and that's a very significant character to get wrong. I'm still interested in seeing all the upcoming DCEU movies. DCEU got Wonder Woman exactly right in a perfect movie, which is the greatest contribution either universe has made to comic book film history. That became one of the most important comic book films along with Superman: The Movie, Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins. MCU films, even when they get the original comic book details right, usually aren't as well-rounded, tonally consistent and emotionally involving as Wonder Woman was.
MCU's films by the Russos are easily their best, and Favreau's two were also very solid, but most of the rest suffer from blandness or elements which just don't come to life on the screen. The DCEU has more stylized direction which makes the films more distinctive and memorable. Their biggest mistakes have been from the studio interference on JL and Suicide Squad, one of which has been corrected. It's easy to imagine a completely independent film from all the DCEU directors being interesting, while the Russos, Favreau and Gunn are the only ones of the MCU who give that sense of strong, visionary direction. DCEU has also been willing to go darker, more intense and have more adult-geared content, while the MCU keeps hitting a ceiling where the movies can't have anything in them that the most conservative parents wouldn't want their 8-year-old to see. I think the DCEU attitude is much better for comic book movies overall, because that represents the evolution in maturity comic books themselves went through quite a long time ago in the 1980s. Even Superman II in 1980 showed Superman in bed with Lois. I don't think the MCU has even had one implied sex scene. The DCEU is also willing to do R-rated movies. Finally, the DCEU hasn't had Taika Waititi direct a movie yet. His attitude is so misplaced and ill-suited for the superhero genre, that he directed the worst superhero movie I've ever seen, Thor: Ragnarok. It's a shabbily constructed film with a fakey, unconvincing look that stands up and proudly spits all over the dignity of superhero history and mythology. Ultimately, both studios seem to be getting worse at this point. Which is why I think it would be a good time for another studio to seriously start adapting the Valiant/Gold Key comics into a new universe. Solar, Turok, Magnus, X-O Manowar, Harbinger, etc. Yes, they tried Bloodshot, but, boy, it was the wrong character to start with, and they have to get real A-list talent behind making the films. Sony or Paramount ought to get the Russos or Snyder to head up adapting that universe to film. |
