Not sure. Must have been a software issue. Reinstalled and reset everything. Recaptured and compared with other software like VLC and they seemed fine now. I really appreciate you noticing the problem.

You won't be disappointed. Also I've corrected the Battle of the Five Armies screenshots and will upload the LOTR Remastered Blu's soon.

Though kinda sucks the option for 48fps isn't on the spec for UHD.
I never saw the 2D HFR, but it was interesting to me seeing the 3D HFR of the last two of the trilogy (only saw the 1st one in standard). I felt the HFR was an especially big aid to the 3D. I'm am not a 3D aficionado, probably only seen about 10 total films in 3D so I don't have much to go on. But I did also see those theatrically Hobbits in 2d and I noticed alot more going on in the 3D HFR version.

It's a shame I'll never be able to watch any 3D at home going forward and HFR doesn't seem likely either.

I can see the curiosity, the 4Ks kinda look like quick AI upscales of the remastered Blus when you compare them directly. I still think the original BDs look better.

I saw the first one in 3D HFR. It reminded me of the SOE that many new TVs were suffering from at the time. It just looked unnatural for film since we are so accustomed to 24fps. It was real frames at least but it also made movie props stick out more (too much detail). Action scenes were better but still some came across as a video game cut scene.

I thought I saw the last two in 3D HFR but I think they might have resorted back to the 24fps versions because they seemed more film like.

The new color grade on the remastered Blu-rays of the Hobbit looks a lot better to me. The originals looked very artificial at times. They were weirdly desaturated for fantasy films and everything on screen had an unflattering white sheen. Many shots had the dreaded green tint, while others were sepia toned, seemingly at random. Remember, they second-guessed many of their design choices, going so far as to digitally shrink Beorn's mohawk, so I wouldn't be surprised if the color grade was one of them.

Things generally look a lot more pleasant and natural now, especially the Shire.

Does anyone know -- is there any available remastered blu-ray set of just the Hobbit trilogy? EE or Theatrical or both?

I'd prefer Region A, if possible.

I already have the remastered EE LOTR blu-ray set . . .

. . . so I'd rather not pay extra to double up and get a remastered complete set of both Hobbit and LOTR trilogies together in one package, unless there's no other choice.

Filmmakers tend to second guess a lot of everything when they revisit a film, I won't make any claims for what one is more accurate in this case (accurate to what?), only for which one I prefer and I really like the grading of all the movies in the HDR versions and the SDRs seem to follow in step....only they don't have that extra lick of processing of the HDR versions. Still got the selective DNR of the new masters in general but there just seems to be an additional grain sweep on the UHDs. The new BDs could be the best of both, although the compression doesn't always look amazing though.

Unfortunately the remastered Hobbit trilogy was never released individually on 2K Blu-ray. The UK The Middle-Earth 6-Film Collection Remastered Theatrical or Extended Edition Set is your only option. It is a UK HMV exclusive but can be picked up at a reasonable price as it's still being produced and the packaging is nice. Each film is comes individually in a plastic case and fits in a cardboard slipcase and cardboard sleeve. I purchased mine from Rarewaves.com and it arrived undamaged and well packaged in a box.

I agree in most cases and particularly in the Shire, but the scenes outside Mirkwood don't look right. It's supposed to be raining and is dark and foreboding, but it's too bright and colorful now. I think it looks better on the original Blu-ray and hides the CGI look in this scene.

Man, those characters on the UHD look like cutout figures or chess pieces placed on the rest of the picture. I don't know if it intentional but you are mentioning remastered BD yet the comparison has the UHD. If comparing remastered BD to old BD, the new doesn't look so bad.

I guess I am one who is now thinking that a lot of people (here at least) may unload the UHDs to go to the remastered BDs. If the look of the new as far as grading goes is preferred, the BDs look like they may be the superior option for that. If one prefers the old grading, well... stay put.

I kept weighing all of this and whether to keep the Hobbit UHDs or not. Knowing 4K format shows really no benefit over the remastered BDs, those are now total turkeys.

I may pick up Fellowship remastered BD whenever a solo arrives - I don't care for the weird color and softness of the original BD, and the extended is oddly colored as well.

The 4ks still have HDR advantage and that's about it lol.

Jesus! The second one with the figures zoomed in looks AWFUL on the 4K, someone should send that to PJ and say 'really? thats how you want it to look???'

And he'd say "yes it is. He hates grain, he hates softness, and for all the blather about how the LOTRs turned out on UHD I think he messed up the Hobbitses even more. That sharpening is just...wow.

The amount of nasty waxy crazy upscaling / sharpening on those UHDs is insane. They're DISGUSTING.

Let's remember what Bill Hunt wrote about them:

Quote:
Detail is outstanding, with lovely texturing visible in clothing, foliage, rock, and hair. (...) And there’s none of the “digitally-processed” appearance that is sometimes apparent in VFX shots in The Lord of the Rings 4Ks.

Farerb- voted!
The primary reason why The Ring of Power was even made by Amazon in the first place is because, they wanted to cash in on the success and popularity of The Lord of the Rings franchise originally created and written by J.R Tolkien only because of their greed.
