BB has LOTR and Hobbitt steelbooks in stock again, for those who may have missed out on the first batch.

I never watched the Hobbit movies. Tried watching the first one about six years ago, but gave up after an hour and a half, I think, because it just didn't grab me like The Lord of the Rings. Having said that, I would have given it another chance with its original high framerate. Bad or good, soap opera effect true or subjective, it would have been something unique that the release had that no other big motion pictures had on home video, a curiosity at least worth checking out. Lame, WB. Lame.

But it supports 50 frames per second, so couldn't they just put in a black frame after every 24th frame? Or double every 24th frame?

Just got done watching these movies over an extended period and I gotta say it was a blast. Even though a few scenes are a little too over-the-top 'high fantasy' which can create a bit of narrative dissonance, they were very enjoyable. The Hobbit presented excellently in 4K with very high video quality. I have a newfound respect for these movies.

Wait, why couldn't they just play The Hobbit at 50 frames a second and then have it end 1/25th sooner? I don't even or barely notice the tiny speedup on my 25 fps PAL DVDs of Angel. Worth the theatrical framerate, I think.
I'd be shocked if most 4K players designed to conform to the Blu-ray Association's specifications couldn't play 50 fps discs. Last edited by Warm Gun; 06-28-2021 at 07:38 AM. |

And while you may not notice the 4% speedup the difference it makes to the pitch of the audio can be very jarring for some people, making it sound like everyone’s taken a hit of helium (indeed, they pitch corrected the old PAL DVDs of the LOTR films). Don’t get me wrongo, I’ve mentioned the speed up + pitch correction myself as a means of making 48fps HFR work on home video, but the issues surrounding worldwide 50Hz compatibility are too great. |

The 48fps version has a bad reputation associated with it (and I agree with that) so on top of the technical difficulties, they probably just don't want to revisit that criticism. It could even be possible that Jackson doesn't like the 48fps anymore, but idk.
