BB has LOTR and Hobbitt steelbooks in stock again, for those who may have missed out on the first batch.

I never watched the Hobbit movies. Tried watching the first one about six years ago, but gave up after an hour and a half, I think, because it just didn't grab me like The Lord of the Rings. Having said that, I would have given it another chance with its original high framerate. Bad or good, soap opera effect true or subjective, it would have been something unique that the release had that no other big motion pictures had on home video, a curiosity at least worth checking out. Lame, WB. Lame.

I think you mean lame, BD association, lame. As the specification for 1080p and 4K Blu-ray has no support for 48fps content. Nothing WB can do about that.

But it supports 50 frames per second, so couldn't they just put in a black frame after every 24th frame? Or double every 24th frame?

Just got done watching these movies over an extended period and I gotta say it was a blast. Even though a few scenes are a little too over-the-top 'high fantasy' which can create a bit of narrative dissonance, they were very enjoyable. The Hobbit presented excellently in 4K with very high video quality. I have a newfound respect for these movies.

I also wanted to see that. At least we have Gemini Man and Billy Lynn.

That would look ugly, and also, I have a feeling most players wouldn't play it.

I wanna test this. I'm just trying to figure out how to add a black frame or a double frame every 25th of a second in Shotcut.

Wait, why couldn't they just play The Hobbit at 50 frames a second and then have it end 1/25th sooner? I don't even or barely notice the tiny speedup on my 25 fps PAL DVDs of Angel. Worth the theatrical framerate, I think.

I'd be shocked if most 4K players designed to conform to the Blu-ray Association's specifications couldn't play 50 fps discs.

You could certainly do that. Again, because most displays in the US don't have 50hz input support, I don't see many US players supporting 25/50fps content. Although higher end ones will of course support it.

25/50 support is NOT mandatory for 4K players, only for those released in territories with ties to the PAL legacy. Several US players do have it, and more and more TVs too, but even now we still get people on here who say that x European Blu-ray won’t work on their player (despite being region free) or has trouble with certain special features because it won’t play the 50Hz content.

And while you may not notice the 4% speedup the difference it makes to the pitch of the audio can be very jarring for some people, making it sound like everyone’s taken a hit of helium (indeed, they pitch corrected the old PAL DVDs of the LOTR films).

Don’t get me wrongo, I’ve mentioned the speed up + pitch correction myself as a means of making 48fps HFR work on home video, but the issues surrounding worldwide 50Hz compatibility are too great.

With caveats, the Hobbit in HFR would be possible in the home. But I'm sure they've had these discussions internally. Much easier to present it at 24fps and keep it consistent with LOTR.

48 fps would work perfectly if you had a VRR display. It wouldn't work for a BD release, but if there was some sort of digital release it would work pretty well assuming you had the right hardware.

The 48fps version has a bad reputation associated with it (and I agree with that) so on top of the technical difficulties, they probably just don't want to revisit that criticism. It could even be possible that Jackson doesn't like the 48fps anymore, but idk.

Seeing the first hobbit film in the high frame rate was a pretty neat experience, it looked like a play at times but I dug it. Wish more directors would have utilized it.

Then how about Europe gets the 50 fps Ultra HD discs of The Hobbit and everybody else has to import or gets half the movie?

Because people in other territories would kick up a HELL of a fuss. Not worth Warners’ time.

Only movie in High Framerate I've personally seen is Gemini Man, and I had no issues with it. Weird to experience, yes, but I didn't at all mind it.

Though kinda sucks the option for 48fps isn't on the spec for UHD.
