Awesome announcement!

I hope this is with the HFR presentation (even though it would be 60 FPS). Never got to see it this way for myself when these played in theaters.

Can wait for a sale if it's theatricals. If it's extendeds, then probably day one.

The Hobbit was near 9 hours long and the only times I was even remotely engaged was;
1. When Bilbo meets Gollum.
2. When Bilbo meets Smaug.

Two scenes in NINE hours.

I'd love to see them in HFR but I wonder how 48 will fit into 60 and still look as smooth as it should. I reckon they'll be simple upscales of the 2K24 masters.

Doesn't the fast frame rate just look like the 'soap opera effect'?

Yes, and some people would like to see it if it was shot that way.

these were shot with 48fps 3d cameras. a 4k release is a compromise over the 3d release even with hdr/wcg added, which again weren't perfect given no 48fps...but still closer. only reason for these (for me) would be for when i dont feel like putting on glasses.

Being that the BDA has, to date, failed to offer a 3D UHD standard, it's all a compromise- you just have to pick which flavor(s) of compromise you prefer.

There's so much CG in these movies that I'm not sure the 'native 3D' acquisition (dual 5K RED rigs) means all that much. Still very good 3D, not arguing that point.

These movies have horrendously blown-out highlights for some reason, especially Battle of the Five Armies. HDR should work wonders on these transfers. Just wish Lesnie were still around to help supervise these and LOTR.

The Atmos 'theatrical' mixes were top notch - bring these puppies on!

I'll probably skip these. I have the EEs of 2+3 in 3D I have still yet to watch. Maybe if I ever get around to watching those I'll get the 4Ks cheap sometime.

Guillermo Del Toro was a huge loss. He would have injected fresh energy. The biggest problem was that it was three movies. It should have been two movies maximum.

Can’t wait.

This is an extremely under-appreciated and over-hated trilogy.

This three part Hobbit retrospective (that was originally meant to be two parts, irony!) is pretty great. Was nominated for a Hugo award IIRC.

As the same time as the LOTR series? Geez peoples, you are killing me . Hopefully it's both versions put together.

These should look lovely!

Wonder if we’ll get some version of the HFR on this release.
