you didn't say the magic words in order for us to help you in this case...
"i am using the ps3 (fat)(slim) start with which one you have. next for the onkyo, i recommend setting the listening mode to multichannel. also for "listening mode bd/dvd) i recommend:
DD - DD
DTS - DTS
Dolby TrueHD - Dolby TrueHD
DTS-HD-MA - DTS-HD-MA
DSD - DSD
MULTICHANNEL PCM - MULTICHANNEL
ANALOG/PCM - DIRECT


Onkyo users will understand what the above settings mean; check your listening modes menu in your setup menu. these are settings i recommend under that setup menu option as these are settings i use right now on my own Onkyo.

i'll waste my time saying it but if you have the ps3 fat, your out of luck because it can't bitstream HD codecs, however it will decode all of them onboard and stream them out as an LPCM via HDMI giving you full lossless sound via HDMI and your receiver should say "multichannel PCM" (or something like that)
if your using the ps3 slim, go into the video settings, under HDMI and set it to betstream not LPCM if you want to stream the raw HD codecs out and let your receiver do the decoding; this way you get the receiver to show the codec light. we like to call them "vanity lights" and yes, i do love seeing them on my receiver as well.
