If the situation had been reversed last January, I probably would have not bought very many BD's this year (and possibly only a few HD DVDs until a winner was more clear).

I think you are right that HD DVD supporters (like us) have a lot of money invested, and the ones at AVS clearly have a lot of social acceptance invested in HD DVD, so I don't think they will give it up easily. The Paramount deal certainly gave them enough emotional momentum to not have to see the light through theholiday season (although Transformers having disappointing sales would do a lot to counter their Paramount euphoria).
I think that this post raises an even more important question. Of the however many hundred thousands standalone HD DVD players on the market, how many are still being used as the main playback unit for HD Media?!?!? This would light a fire under the HD DVD camp if they realized that people are systematically leaving them to join "the enemy". We have witnessed a number of people on this very forum stating that they have turned to the Blu side and won't look back. Now, if I was an HD DVD supporter, the constant numbers would make me start to think beyond my immediate surroundings and make start to think about the larger consumer base regarding the decisions that I have made about my own preferred home theatre medium.
