Digital Bits just posted an initial review of 2001.

I've just had the chance to look at Warner's 2001: A Space Odyssey on Blu-ray Disc, and I've got to tell you... WOW. The film just looks amazing. I haven't sampled the extras yet, and I haven't watched the whole film yet, but what I've seen is pretty spectacular. All of these Kubrick titles street today on DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD, and I suspect you're not going to be disappointed if you buy them.

Coolness.

Reading that makes me less mad that Amazon has delayed my delivery until December.

Bet it won't really take that long though.

Watched it before bed last night---not recommended. The timing, I mean...I felt soooo alooooone....

Now I'm going to drive all my acquaintances mad for the next couple days, conversing exclusively in Halspeak...

I've never seen it, is it similar to CE3K? I liked that one a lot. I saw the preview on Netflix and was not blown away, it just seemed kind of boring...I hope I don't offend anyone by saying that...

No it's not like Close Encounters at all really. It's not a traditional narrative kind of film. There's not much dialogue and it's very very visual in the way it's told.

I love both 2001 and Close Encounters but apart from them both being brilliant the similarity kindof stops there!

EDIT: on second thought they do both have very visual sequences. There are bits in 2001 that are kindof similar to the dialog-less sequences in CE.

The Shining, one of the best horror movies ever. Simply stunning.

A Clockwork Orange, just one of the most original movies ever.

I also just love Eyes Wide Shut. It gets madder and madder as it goes, which a lot of people state as a reason NOT to like it. I think it's sublime.

In fact, just buy them all (is there a box set?). I am.

Cheers.
I agree that it's really impossible to pick "THE" Kubrick film to recommend to someone, as each is absolutely remarkable in its own right. To me, 2001 and The Shining are both "musts"...

It's rated as one of the best Blu-rays you can get with pristine PQ.

Although the film itself is not for everyone, it is one of the best films made. The PQ is astounding, the sound as well. They really took their time perfecting this one and did not take any short cuts.
I would say this is an excellent one for your first, I showed it to some of my friends (all nerds like me) and they were floored by the quality of it.
