The 2:35:1 Aspect of Avatar is actually cropped and cut at the top and bottom of the image. This film was shot in 1:78:1 and had to be cropped to 2:35:1 for release in theaters. The only theaters that showed the native 1:78:1 were IMAX Theaters.

I have had the cough "internet version" of this film on my computer for nearly 2 months and it's 1:78:1. When i compare it to the trailers of the film which are 2:35:1 you wouldn't believe how much of the image is missing.

Frankly speaking the 1:78:1 Native Aspect Ratio of Avatar is the only way to watch this movie......

Next Thursday can't come sooner. This will be money well spent for my favorite movie of 2009 and probably the last few years, and a welcome addition to my collection and most likely a new standard in PQ and AQ on highdef formats!

One con about the Avatar BD? The loading time is longer than usual (mine takes about almost a minute in my BDP-S360).

One pro about the BD is that it resumes playback from where you last left off, which is refreshing for a new Blu-ray.

Do you have BD Live enabled on your Sony player?

Jon Landau makes a good point:

Quote:
Q: For this initial DVD/Blu-Ray release, we're not getting any commentary track [or behind the scenes]. I will address the elephant in the room, so to speak.

A: But it's not an elephant in the room. An elephant in the room is something people don't speak about. We're very candid about it. We're not sitting there saying to the consumer, "By the way, here's this thing, and we have a few little frills on it." And not tell them that, by the way, later on, there's going to be something with even more frills. We're being very upfront. We're coming out now, and the reason we're coming out with this right now is because there truly is a demand for people who want to return to Pandora. We could not put together a quality special addition in this time frame. We just couldn't do it. In addition to which, the best quality that people can see this movie in, is with less material on the disk. The people who want the added content [are] a small section of the fan base. We're telling them, "If you want to wait, wait." We're rushing to make November anyway, with this content. But for the people that don't care about that... We're saying, "Here, every bit of data and [space on this] Blu-Ray is devoted to the movie."

Q: What will the downside be to waiting until November? The presentation quality?

A: The November release is going to be a four-disc collection. Now, I'm just making this up. I'm not saying this is going to happen, but maybe there's one disc that is exactly the same disc that is out now. Maybe it's the other three discs that are the added content... We want each thing to stand up on its own.

I can't think of a single line of logic that would lead one to that conclusion

Even though some of the justification for double-dipping is surely just marketing, I don't see how they could do this release any other way.

There's no way they could release a special edition packed with extras in such a short time window. So focus on image and sound quality now, and get a special edition down the road.

They could have perhaps at least snuck in some extras now, but frankly I don't really care. I'll consider picking up the special edition later, but am not worried about it at all right now.

Having read that list of special features for the 4-disc edition, I've cancelled my order for next week's release, and will simply be Netflix-ing it, instead. Knowing Cameron, this November version's gonna be badass.
