I love James Cameron, I think he might be my favourite director today but this movie is kind of a mess. Takes so long to get going, so many over the top performances, not enough action, etc. I know a lot of people hate Edward Furlong but I think he's fine and not enough of a reason to detract from my 5/5 score for the much better sequel.

Next greatest rental: “Life.”
Didn’t really make me laugh out loud that much, but I was quite pleased with the story and characters. The characters were very likable; Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence were quite the pair. The movie is pretty amusing and entertaining the whole way through. It has a fair share of funny moments and dramatic moments. This film is very solidly-filmed and has an excellent production value. Acting is excellent all around. It's fun. ![]() 4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5) Last edited by Al_The_Strange; 09-16-2010 at 07:15 PM. |

I've got a long list for sure, but I might put them on the back-burner and focus on horror films this season (I added on a bunch of movies with "...of the Dead" in the title ![]() ![]() |

The Red Shoes 8.25/10
This is a film I have heard time and time again at how marvelous and stunning it is. I pretty much agree, but it's not even close to being one of the best films I have seen. Technically it's brilliant and also the 15 minute ballet scene was magnificent, but the story (which is engaging) isn't anything special. I understand it's praise, but I can't give it the praise I would like. |

[Show spoiler] .Speaking of horror and make-up... Watched “Thirteen Ghosts.” Or rather, “13 Ghosts.” Or better yet, “Thir13en Ghosts” ![]() Not exactly the best story, and certainly not the creepiest or scariest. And yet, it’s so darn fun! There’s a lot of style over substance, but the substance is adequate enough for a quick escapist thrill, and actually has some cool parts to it. But it's the characters that matter the most; half of them are pretty adequately emotional, and the other half are just fun to watch. For the most part though, the film excels with its SFX (a little fake-looking perhaps), the creature effects and make-up work (all of the ghosts are characteristic and cool), and the gnarly violence ( [Show spoiler] ). The film is well-shot; there are many rapid cuts and flashy transitions that may get a little too wild, but most of the film still looks sharp. The production value is phenomenal though; the glass house is probably one of the coolest sets ever. Acting is pretty good; I usually see a bit of the deadpan engineer from “Galaxy Quest” (or possibly “Monk”) when I see Tony Shalhoub, but in this film he managed to play a decent character. Matthew Illard was quite amusing. All that being said though, the film still has a few shortcomings. Some of the editing looks a little cheap, reusing certain shots or showing two different things in a scene. The story suffers the most, filled with lots of unlikely twists and turns, and having a very elaborate scheme that gets glossed over with rapid-fire exposition. 3.5/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 3/5, film: 3.5/5) This British Blu-Ray is cool. Video quality is very sharp and very clean. I think some noise reduction may have been applied, but not enough to be totally distracting. A few scenes still showed some light grain and noise. Colors are good; contrast is adequate. Sound quality seemed okay; some dialogue seemed a bit low, but was still well-pronounced. For both video and audio, I think I noticed a lot of things I never noticed before, like ghosts fading in and out, and hearing their voices… ![]() PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5 Disc is region-free! ![]() |
