They didn't really ask him to "shut up". Don't really see like out of chatacter in my opinion. Remember Marion punched Indy in the face in Raiders.

+1 !

In an interview Spielberg said:
"You know...all the traditions of Indiana Jones are back again. I wasn't trying to reinvent.....I wasn't trying to make this movie bigger or better."

"We created Indiana Jones but it belongs to the world. And now we're their custodians. And our job really is to serve up a huge helping of not only what Indiana Jones means to older people who grew up with it but we need to reintroduce the character to those who didn't. And so those are my responsibilities."

To hear a director like Spielberg say these things is pretty sad in my opinion. The motivation for making Crystal Skull was just wrong. You can't create something special like that.

Still don't understand all the negativity on KOTC. Last I noticed, there wasn't any green tint in it...

It's not out of character for Marion. It's Indy that ruins that scene. Since when does he stop to give a lecture at a time of crisis? Really, why would anyone? And the following snake scene is horrific.

Just an idea, maybe they wanted to show Indy's age...as the character is older. Maybe they are trying to insert a quick "older, wiser type guy" into the character we've all come to know & love!

Raiders Of The Lost Ark- 6.5/10
Temple Of Doom- 6.5/10
Last Crusade- 6.5/10
Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull- 10/10

I might get this set just to have even though I barely watch the first 3 movies. I'll Probably get it when it comes down to under $30.

Am I reading your ratings correctly? They make absolutely no sense.

And I thought that was brilliant because rather than some crazy technology or magic, a very simple device was used to solve the problem AND it had the bonus of being scientifically accurate.

I love that moment. "I suddenly remembered my Charlemagne."

I love the little moment of acceptance/appreciation Indy has as Connery walks out of frame.

The religious and spirtual overtones were completely thrown away for a science fiction/alien angle. The film had no heart, and whether you love or hate the 2 previous sequels, they had charm and heart. Skull really had no passion from anyone involved, and you could feel it.
I hated this movie, but I disagree with your assessment. People mellow as they age so it was perfectly natural for Marion not to be as badass and for Indy to be more of a pushover. Also, life expectancy in 1957 was only 69 years, and Indy was supposed to be 58 in the film and wouldn't have been expected to live all that much longer (even though according to the TV series, he actually lived to be quite old).

But the one thing that bothered me about Indy's character in all these movies was that he (among his other exploits) was supposed to be a college professor and the character never came across to me as being all that intelligent most of the time.

As for Spielberg, I think his amazing success has hurt his creative abilities. For one thing, when you're as successful as Spielberg, you no longer interact with ordinary people and you no longer lead a life that is similar to the way that most people live. In his earlier films, I think Spielberg really understood average people and his casting of character roles and extras was brilliant (think of the business people in Jaws or the neighbors standing around outside Richard Dreyfus' house in Close Encounters..). Such success also means you stop doubting yourself and you're less hungry because you've got less to prove. So I don't think any of his recent films are as good as most of his earlier films. I don't think it's a matter of Spielberg not caring or "dialing it in". I think he's simply run out of great ideas. Also, people have peak creative periods. Like Dylan in the late 60s or Woody Allen from 1977 to 1987.

The other problem in Skull was that (IMO) Shia LaBeouf was the wrong choice for Indy's son. To me, he was both uninteresting and annoying. I think there had to of been better choices out there. I could never see him taking over the mantle of the franchise. Although he would have been too old for the role, I think someone like Bradley Cooper would have been a far better choice.

My main beef with Kingdom was involving aliens. It was totally unnecessary, but seeing how George Lucas wrote the story I wasn't surprised because he's a one trick pony and has to put aliens in the movie to mooch off the success of Star Wars because he can't do anything else creatively.

So basically everything is done, but we are still roughly a year from release.

Make sense.

This is completely untrue. Thematically, I think his most challenging work has come in his later years, and Munich alone is enough to show he is still on his game, while commenting on the current political climate in an interesting way. He did the same thing with War of The Worlds, which was more of a terrorism allegory, than it was about aliens taking over the world.

Aliens fit because the movie was an homage to '50s sci-fi b movies. The same way the adventure films and serials of the' 30s-'40s etc. influenced the first two. I thought that was a very interesting and creative idea George had. How do the aliens in KOTC mooch off of Star Wars in any way?
