Fark yeah!

Indy

Star wars

Jurassic Park

This 12 months is going to be epic. I finally get to break my 2-3yr drought away from JP and Indy films. I will be so happy and so glad I starved for that amazing HD experience.

I'd rank the series as follows:
Raiders 10/10
Temple of Doom 9/10
Last Crusade 8/10
Crystal Skull 7/10
Exactly how I'd rate them. I love Temple of Doom, it's got an incredible, unrelenting pace (for the most part) and the darkness is well balanced by the adventure found in the minecart and opening sequences.

As for the raft drop being indefensible - absolute rubbish. Saying "That would never happen" or "I don't like that" is one thing but the "defence" - if it even needs it - is that these are big, pulpy, B-movie serials. The defence is that it's fun and exciting, exactly what these films aim to be and how the films that inspired them were. Is it over the top? Sure. But again - big, pulpy B-movie serials.

Also, I like the term "apology sequel". I can see why it would be applied to Last Crusade, turning back to the Raiders template and making it much more light-hearted after the backlash against Temple of Doom. Nothing to do with Indy but it's how I feel about Epispdes II and III - say what you want about Episode I but at least Lucas did what he wanted to do. II and III feel like he's trying to appease the fans by shoving in as many fanboy things as possible. But that's for another thread.

It would be hilarious if Indy's hat was now red and everyone carried nerf guns instead of real ones. Also, Indy would never punch first.

Well, he was rather cleaned-up as a character in the third film, more of a corporate symbol spouting boy scout lines like, "That cross belongs in a museum!" than the harder-edged Bogart-inspired Indy we met in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Of course, this is also the difference between Lawrence Kasdan writing your screenplay, versus Jeffrey Boam or David Koepp.

Anyway, most of the time, my rankings in things like this usually fall not in order of which film I liked more, but which film was better made, and the flat Last Crusade can't hold a candle to either of the first two films. Crystal Skull is more ambitious behind the camera than Last Crusade, but that's all torn apart by Koepp's screenplay and the terrible scenes with Karen Allen.

Eh, I never had a problem with Last Crusade. It was definitely the most "comedic" of the three, but I don't think his character was wildly different from the previous films, other than adding in the father/son dynamic. Temple of Doom was always by far my least favorite of the three, but I think it was the supporting cast for the most part that hurt my opinion of the film.

I DID have a problem sometimes with Indy's character in KotCS though. One scene I noticed in particular that I thought was out of character was when they were stuck in the "quicksand," and Indy starts explaining the difference between types of sand until they tell him to shut up. Now that was definitely not something Indy should be doing-- in the previous films, somebody else would start doing that and Indy would be telling him to shut up.

I've never understood the hatred for Temple of Doom. It's always been my favorite and I loved Crystal Skull also. Yeah Raiders is awesome and can't be beat but that doesn't make Temple any less cool. The style is great and it has awesome action scenes. I think the problem is people take Indiana Jones too seriously. Also Spielberg shouldn't of publicly apologized for Temple. His problems were with violence and the dark nature of the story but that's what I loved about it. Indiana Jones is supposed to be pulpy and cartoony and that's exactly what Temple and Crystal Skull do. I saw Crystal Skull in the theater and left totally jazzed and loved it and then I start reading all this bashing. People need to lighten up and just have fun watching this type of movie. Just because something isn't scientifically accurate doesn't mean it's not fun to watch. Here's how I rate them, in order from favorite to least favorite:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Insanity is running rampant ITT. Here's something to make it better:

Raiders (10/10)
Temple (7.5/10)
Crusade (9/10)
Skulls (4/10)

That feels... right.

I agree. The line never contained the word Jewish. The pause in the line was exactly for the reason you described, Peter.

Maybe its not fun to watch an almost 70 year old Indiana Jones with a bad script....just sayin.

lol! I honestly was never sure of what was said in that line, until a few minutes ago, when, thanks to the power of the internet, I found this on IMDB just now!

Quote:
Mola Ram: Bali Mangthi Kali Ma.
[Sacrifice is what Mother Kali desires]
Mola Ram: Shakthi Degi Kali Ma.
[Power is what Mother Kali will grant]
Mola Ram: Kali ma... Kali ma... Kali ma, shakthi deh!
[Mother Kali... Mother Kali... Mother Kali, give me power!]
via IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087469/quotes

Is that correct? I dunno, but IMDB says it is

Your interpretation is amazing though! SHOCK THE DAY!

(i'm not picking on you, I really had no idea what that line really was until I made a real effort in looking it up )

On a side note, I CANNOT WAIT to see this on blu-ray! LotR, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, etc. There are so many movie franchises I have been anxiously waiting for in HD, but Indiana Jones has always been at the top of my list! When I was young, I wanted to BE Indiana Jones and have my own adventures looking for lost treasures! And an earlier post made me fondly remember the Indiana Jones novels that came out when I was young; I loved those books! This thread is going to make it very difficult for me to hold on to any patience I may have had left for the blu-ray release! (In a good way! )

Not "wildly different". Sanitized. Sort of the way Mickey Mouse became scrubbed free of any hard edges because by 1989, Indiana Jones had a (TM) by his name. The Indiana Jones as conceived by Kasdan, who would rather save the Ark than save Marion...that Indiana Jones is not present in Last Crusade.

Instead we get young Boy Scout Indy, and then a Boy Scout Indy in his 40's. Neither fit what we saw in Raiders.

I only saw that movie once - you're reminding me of things my brain clearly tried to make me forget in order to protect itself from complete implosion.

As a longtime Indy fan they dropped the ball on Skull in a few places. None of the characters fit the personas they had built in the past. Marion used to be a strong "badass" woman and now she was a muppet who couldn't fight her way out of a bag. Indy was indeed a pushover, and the movie was built to pass the torch over. The religious and spirtual overtones were completely thrown away for a science fiction/alien angle. The film had no heart, and whether you love or hate the 2 previous sequels, they had charm and heart. Skull really had no passion from anyone involved, and you could feel it.
